I remember it being reduced, but I thought they only reduced the amount he had to pay back in terms of his own transfer fee. This was because although they paid £22m, he had actually played for the club and therefore Chelsea had some “value” from his fee, so couldn’t claim it had all been wasted.
In terms of Hardaker it’s different. Cas had him on loan until the end of the season anyway. Consequently, we saw no value from the £150k whatsoever.
If anything, Cas’ biggest mistake was paying the fee earlier than necessary. Knowing his history, common sense would have disctated leaving it as long as possible before paying the fee.
