I don't think he was swearing. I think he was saying 'At least I'm not Hopoate!' and the accompanying gesture was misunderstood.

I wonder if the bloke who took that snap of Sutcliffe in a bow tie got copywrite on the photo. It's the only one they ever use. He should be a millionaire by now.
