Margin Call - a study of the events leading to the financial crash, based around the packaging of sub-prime mortgages; not the most filmic of subject matter at first glance, but it gripped me from start to finish. A stellar cast and some absolutely brilliant performances from Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons and Zachary Quinto, playing a Spock-like rocket scientist turned financial analyst. Outstanding.

The Wolf of Wall Street - despite being bum-numbingly long, absolutely brilliant; Scorcese has a knack of portraying the charisma and magnetism of morally bankrupt, repugnant characters and he does so here to great effect. Brilliant stuff.

As most films should be - less than 90 minutes so you don't start shifting uneasily in your chair. Not as good as some of the reviews I'd heard but still a film that moved along nicely.

Maybe still wishing on a rare afternoon off I'd gone to see Pride or The Equalizer though.....

Fury - 9/10. Probably the best WW2 film since Saving Private Ryan.

Gravity - in 2D. Some lovely visuals and Sandra Bullock has always been easy to look at, but the story was just daft; it's neither sci-fi nor sci-fact, so left me shaking my head a lot of the time.

A spectacular idea, unspectacularly realised. Shame.

Zero Dark Thirty - 5/10. What an overrated borefest this was. I'd heard about the torture scenes and to be honest that wasn't what put me off. I just found the whole thing boring
