Best Film : Wed Jul 15, 2015 1:00 pm
Not sure if this has been done before....sure it has, but what is the best film you've ever seen?

The one I've seen the most is Donnie Darko. It's a film I never get tired of watching, must have seen it over a hundred times. It just has a certain something that I can't put my finger on what it is exactly. It's original in a lot of ways, the cinematography, unusual camera angles, the soundtrack, all excellent. It has some genuinely funny laugh out loud moments, some tragic, sad scenes, without being overly sentimental. All the cast are very good, and also there are parts of it that you hadn't noticed before, even when you have seen it loads of times! As a downside, which would be a pretty major one to most people, i'm still not sure what it's actually about!!

Did you get rid of all the voices in your head? Do you now miss them and the things that they said?

The Jerk (Steve Martin). Saw it at cinema on it's release in 1979 and have never tired of watching it to this day.

It's hard to pick out one single film but I would say Saving Private Ryan with Tom Hanks as my favourite. The D-Day battle scenes have not been bettered yet IMO.

Best is subjective, but my favourite film of all time is Bladerunner; I saw the Final Cut at the iMax in Bradford recently - it's still a masterpiece.

Whilst the visuals are just as impressive today, I do think it is let down somewhat by its score. I was never a fan of Vangelis (not quite Michael Nyman/Phillip Glass annoying but getting there) but I did think his score fit perfectly - in the eighties.

Unfortunately (and like most stuff impregnated with the foul odor of that decade) I think half of more of the album just doesn't fit this century.

It is, inevitably and rather like me, of its time; unlike me however, it has aged beautifully. I shan't be swayed.

But 2001: A Space Odyssey is twenty years older and yet, if anything, has dated far less.

There's something about the eighties. You can't wash it off.

It's the reason Alien looks better today than Aliens.

As I said - it's purely subjective; I think it's a brilliant piece of work and the soundtrack works just fine for me.

It's very difficult to choose a best ever because films move me for different reasons.

I think 'Schindler's List' is a masterpiece but I didn't enjoy watching it at all!

Luc Besson's 'Leon' is another stand out classic

Then there's some largely unheralded movies that I've watched numerous times over the years and will no doubt watch again, they're flawed and not classics but they have a unique feel that isn't like other movies.
'Rounders'
'Sleepers'
'JFK'
'Shawshank Redemption'
'The Long Good Friday'
