Difficult to judge when he was only playing opposite Paul Johnson, who is an inferior 2nd rower playing out of position. Gilly probably wont get that much space round the outside of another centre at all this year.
It will also be a different task defending against a proper centre as the season progresses. It was Huddersfield who cut him to shreds in the game he played at centre last year, so will be interesting on Sunday to see how he copes.
Needs to have more faith in his winger, although he was hopefully trying to protect Armstrong a bit - once Meli gets in, he will be able to use him more (or as the season progresses and Armstrong develops into a first team winger).
It also looks like he has been working on his speed a bit more, because he looked a lot leaner and faster than in previous years.
Overall, a good start.
