Can only have 5 non- federation players we have perry, puletua, soliola, lance, laffanenfau

Meli has an excemption as he was playing in the uk prior to the change from quota to federation same applies to King.

Non fed trained, so no room (and he's not exempt if he signs for another club!)

Do you have a source for that? I was led to believe in a thread on the VT about the overseas malarky a while ago that the exemption stays with the player until retirement (or presumably until they go back to the NRL). Not saying you're wrong, like - just wondering if you've got that on cast iron authority.

erm, sorry it just what i had heard, and it does seem reasonable.
The whole Fed trained/quota rules are just another example of the RFL overcomplicating an essentially simple system.

The current mess is a bit of a necessary evil though. The quota rule never worked because of all the Kolpac options. If you changed the rule to non-fed train = no loopholes. The problem is that it would get legally challenged by those already under contract prior to the rules changing as clubs would have had to honour said contracts.

In 3-5 years time (unfortunately long) there should be no way around having more than 5 non-fed trained players in your squad. Across that time the numbers will have to reduce as those with exemptions retire. I can't see any other way in which the RFL could have reduced the quota numbers without leaving themselves open to being sued.

King will not be going Saints. He's been quoted saying the only two clubs he'll play for are Melbourne & Warrington.

I'd take Matt King, but only if we could get Kelsey Grammer to dub his voice every time he speaks to camera.
