would you rather he stays this year and not get anything or leave you hanging with some money for a replacement?

I'd rather him stay. AS i said, don't want to see Sts be neutered by a money grabber. It'll take the fun out of beating you!

I'd rather he stay, period. If he has decided to leave then personally I don't know which scenario would be best. We would be kind of dumped in the pooh if he suddenly left as our other halfbacks haven't had much experience at halfback in the first team. However, I'm sure a fee for him would be useful to Saints. But if he stayed then it might be awkward if his heart is not in it. I would be tempted to bench him sometimes and give our other halfbacks a go so that we have some cover available for next season (assuming we don't make a purchase to replace him).

Badge kissing is such a hollow, hollow gesture. Anyone could do it.

And Everton fans will attest to how hollow a gesture a "Once a... Always a..." is.

Like I said. Give us years of service and trying his heart out week in week out, and this episode will be forgotten.
