Matai is a great player but will cost a fair wedge
for a single player.

The backline needs a complete overhaul and
has been neglected for a while.

One other nettle Saints have yet to grasp in the need to bin
off Gardner as well although he has a year left on his deal.

The fashionable view seems to be either
NRL superstar or stick with the kids.

I think a pair of wingers and a left centre
(although I would be happy with Wheeler
if he could prove his fitness) are required.

I would rather take a punt on a couple of development
signings from the Championship or an out of favour
SL player.

For Matai's money you could probably get Menzie Yere and
a Kevin Penny or Paddy Flynn.

I like the ideal of Perry a current SOO and Test NRL prop.
However in isolation Matai could just end up as an
expensive version of Talau with a Shaun Day type winger outside him .

I think the backs need to be looked at as a unit rather than individual
positions.

More a case of being fed up with Gardner :)

Point taken will tone down the praise, otherwise this will
end up as the new Conroy/Smith.

How about a punt on Nicky Royle? Out of contract at Fylde, current England RU Sevens winger, had RL experience with Widnes and seriously quick. Similar perhaps to Wigans punt on Mark Preston from the same club a few years back.

How typical of people on this board. Nothing constructive just cheap throw-away comments to hide degrees of ignorance. In response:-

Martin Offiah - didnt hit the height in any code prior to RL

Mark Preston -

Roy Mathias -

Blah, blah.

He's been at Widnes and Warrington and is now playing a kids game in RU sevens. That really qualifies him to be picked up by a team looking to compete for trophies.

I do like his wikipedia entry too:

Royle played for the Widnes Vikings and Warrington Wolves. He was noted for his speed, however his defensive frailties were exposed and he chose to move to the 15 a-side code

He didn't make it at Widnes, Warrington or Sale and is out of contract at a National League Two North team and has been a Pro Rugby player in both codes since 2004?

High Praise indeed.

Good constructive reply - well done - see, you can do it - why not post this in the first place as having to be stung to do it!
