Smith played in the play off semi final (and probably should have played in the GF), and played well enough, but I cant remember any "outstanding" pieces of play he has done throughout his whole time in the Saints team.

He kicked that touchlien conversion to win us the game against Hull I think it was? Other than that...well ermmm.... yeah, that touchlien conversion.

I've been watching Saints for thirty years. I've not been this excited about a young player coming through in all that time. Not even Cunningham.

He's got all the attributes needed to be a world class scrum half. In Fact, I'd go as far as saying that if he gets a good run in the team this year, which I like to think he would, then he could very well be getting a call from Mr Smith at the end of the year. He really is that good.

Eastmond has been out for a long time and must still be rusty. At this moment Wheeler is closer to match sharpness and if it's a choice between the two for one half back slot I'd go with him, with Eastmond on the bench.

He kicked a penalty on the death to win the match against Hull by one point at the beginning of 2008 season, yes, and soon after broke his leg in a reserves match so we didn't get to see him play again last year. During 2007 he led us in fine form to help secure our place at the Grand Final, covering for Long who was injured for what seemed like ages. He should have played at the Grand Final, not least because (a) Long was clearly not ready to return and (b) he had helped get us there so, IMO, deserved the opportunity. I think he did a fine job for a young bloke and under a lot of pressure given our previous season's success.

I just love the fact we are arguing about 3 Saints Juniors replacing Long in the first team...

It wasn't Long ago (see what i tried there) there was quite widespread fear it would be a nightmare to replace Long and Cunningham and Sculthorpe and now with Moore doing so well at Huddersfield and Wheeler, Kyle and Smith (though we hardly see enough its just for Conroy's sake), Clough we are actually debating who should take over from within without even thoughts of signing anyone.

I havn't seen enough of any of them (has anyone?) to have a definitive answer. I do know that IMO eastmond is the more exciting prospect at 7 and Wheeler could be a good 6 or centre (ala leon) smith could IMO be a very good 9 as well as 7, and Scott Moore a definite 9. I personally think we have seen the last of Matty at saints as Kyle looks more confident at 7 and Scott more confident at 9, i just dont see a place for him. It is as has been said before a position other sides would kill to be in.

You can throw Lomax into the mix as well.

Exciting times.
