Updated again with Puletua re-signing.

I've also attempted the quota / overseas trained debate. As far as I'm aware, we are upto the limit on overseas trained but have 2 more spcaes on the quota, which would probably rule any signings out. This is dependent on Laffranchi though. Need some clarification on that.

2012 signings:

Mark Flanagan - 2013

Departures 2012:

Leon Pryce - Les Catalans Dragons
Matty Ashurst - Salford
Scott Moore - Widnes
Tom Armstrong - Swinton
Gareth Frodsham - Batley Bulldogs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new rules HAVE been agreed and as far as I understand is as follows:

2011
At least 8 "home grown" players
No more than 5 overseas quota players
No more than 5 "overseas trained" players inc 5 OQs
Rest of squad to be from players trained within same Federation

Where "home grown" = any player still under 21 and/or has completed 3 years service with same club before turning 21.

same federation = any player still under 21 and/or has completed 3 years service before turning 21 with other clubs within UK for UK SL clubs or France for Catalans etc.

overseas quota = as per current rules i.e. anyone unable to prove origins within EU or Kolpak countries.

and

"overseas trained" = any other player

Tommy Makinson has just signed a new two year deal (it was on the Saints website recently). So I assume he'll be up for renewal at the end of 2014? Didn't Lee Gaskell re-sign for three years? Again, that's on the Saints website news pages.

Yes I think Gaskell did sign a new deal. It prompted Jamie foster into wanting a new deal which I believe talks have taken place already.

Sorry to see Tom Armstrong go, but he is doing a Uni ting after not being offered a contract apparently.

http://blogs.bettor.com/St-Helens-centre-Tom-Armstrong-inks-new-deal-with-Swinton-Lions-Rugby-League-a106235

So thats 3 in and 7 out according to the above.
And we thought our squad depth was a bit thin at time this season!!

Thats Saints recruitment policy for you. Why sign players when you can bring through your own. An admirable policy really, but not one conducive to winning trophies as the young players on the whole are not top line SL players.

Wigan managed it last year.

We're not far off. 6 Grand Finals on the bounce suggests that. But, we do need a bit more quality in a few areas.

Just looking at whose contract is up next year, I've let a few go like Flannery and Wellens who I doubt will sign again.
But from those left who would be your key signing?

For me it has to be Soliola, if we can get him for sa another 3 years it would give us a big pack for years to come as he's still relitavley young.

Sia Soliola 2012 Overseas Quota Overseas trained - 3/4 years
Francis Meli 2012 Exempt from quota -
Jon Wilkin 2012 Same federation - 2 years
Paul Clough 2012 Homegrown - 3/4 years
Gary Wheeler 2012 Homegrown - Could go either way, depending on fitness in 2012
Andrew Dixon 2012 Homegrown - Again could go either way, depending on performances
Jamie Foster 2012 Homegrown - 2 years
Coach: Simmons coach 2012 - Could go either way, can never tell with a coach.

Gary Wheeler 2012 - depends how he goes in 2012 (more injuries and I'd let him go as we can't carry him indefinitely)
Andrew Dixon 2012 - depends how he goes in 2012
Jamie Foster 2012 - 2 years
Coach: Simmons coach 2012 - 1 or 2 year extension as I thought he did a fab job in 2011
