Can't say I'm too disappointed we didn't make a move. We need a 7 but I personally think Long is now well past his best. He's started to pick up a few injuries in the last few years too and Saints obviously felt he only had perhaps another year left in him. .
He had his major injuries when he was young though - like the facial reconstruction a certain nasty player gave him (who still gets booed to this day at KR
). He isn't injured any more or less than most other players.
I don't think the club's decision is really based upon Long as such. We're about to lose a few of our key players. We need to manage that and where possible our young players brought into the first grade this season will be trained up to fill those positions. It's more about the transition of the club into the Saints of the future than the ability of Long. He wasn't prepared to do what Cunningham has been doing now for a couple of seasons and take things on a year by year basis. He wanted a two year stability package and that was that for him. The club needed more flexibility given their need to plan for the future so couldn't make him that offer. Something had to give and Hull did just that! I hope he goes well for them. If he does, he will be a real asset to them IMO.
