To me, it reads like "We were going to appoint Sharp. People don't seem to like that. So we'll interview a few blokes and go through the motions, and then afterwards we can still appoint Sharp, but can tell everyone that he was clearly the best candidate of those interviewed and stood out head & shoulders above the rest".
Let's be honest, we're all getting used to total guff coming out of the club these days, that you fully expect it on almost every press release. Although the press release will likely spell his name John Sharpe...
