What irks me more is one those wealthy "sons" has not wished to do anything for the city.

If he is not interested in helping the Bulls (although he laughingly described himself as a fan when he retired), why not do something of benefit.

Why not the Odeon? or sponsor a ward at BRI? or a school?

I would be immensely sceptical of classing anything written in the Sun as "news".

NZ Herald piece on Chalmers & Lowe dated 2015 - Guess it will have been resolved now :-

New Zealand league legend Graham Lowe's former recruitment company has been put into liquidation owing Inland Revenue almost $1 million.

But the 10-staff business that Lowie Recruitment Ltd operated is still running and was sold to another firm before the insolvency, liquidators said yesterday.

Although the business - still trading as Lowie Recruitment - continues to use Lowe's nickname, the former Manly, Queensland and Kiwis coach is no longer involved in it, a staff member told the Weekend Herald.

The business is now run as a division of Pounamu International, a company co-directed by former New Zealand Rugby League chairman Andrew Chalmers.

Mr Chalmers directed the now-liquidated Lowie Recruitment alongside Mr Lowe, who resigned from its board in October last year about two months before liquidators were appointed.

Liquidator Mike Lamacraft in his first report said that the company fell behind in its tax obligations and was unable to reach a repayment deal with Inland Revenue.

After the IRD served it a demand, the company decided to go into voluntary liquidation shortly before Christmas.

The liquidators say the company owes IRD $960,000 and other creditors $40,000.

Neither Mr Lowe nor Mr Chalmers responded to messages left by the Weekend Herald yesterday.

It doesn't bode well.

But I suppose the RFL have done extensive research and are satisfied with their suitability. They are very good at that...

I'm sure Frank has some info but it's just that he upgrades it to "he knows". he said 3 weeks ago it was a "done deal", well so very clearly it was no such thing. Indeed, 3 days (at least) of talks with RFL which still haven't actually produced an announcement of a final agreement are the proof. Unless the talks are just some mad spoof to make it look like there wasn't a deal, when all the time there was.

The other question that puzzles me greatly is how, given the financial mega-toilet-pan that his Bulls eventually went down, was Green going to fund his purchase of the ground, which was always on the brink of happening, yet curiously never did. If he had financial backers that were going to pay for this, then where are they now? I mean, a distress sale must have been available at a cheaper price, or at least not more expensive. It seems certain that Green was having these lengthy talks and they must have come at least fairly close to a deal.

I'm also presuming that the deal in this case is proposed to be just the lease from the RFL, not ownership of the ground, since the Council haven't been mentioned. The immediate advantage of that is that we can probably afford a peppercorn a year, and the Council might not even ask for payment anyway. If it was me, I'd send them a full plastic Tesco tub and pay off the full rent 150 years in advance.

Mick's just tweeted about positive talks this morning. Does this mean he got invited to the discussions?
