Englands Seven Point Plan : Wed Apr 08, 2009 3:45 pm
http://www.therfl.co.uk/~therflc/superleague/news_item.php?id=13654n

We all remember the failure we endured during the world cup, today the RFL announced there plan to deal with it.

What does everybody think of the points and do we we think it will actually deal with the issues?

You do realise this is the Bulls forum? We can't even hold on to a 26 point lead so WTF do we know?

I reckon we've enough problems of our own to figure, and if we have any answers at all, we should concentrate them on solving our own issues

We need a larger pool of English players to compete with each other for places and to then compete with Australia and New Zealand forinternational honours. 8+ Overseas players per team is ridiculous+

Again it's the fault of overseas players.

This is not the case. If a young british player is good enough he will break into the team. Sam Burgess, James Roby, Joe Westerman are all proof of this. The problem is not SL clubs bringing in kiwis, aussies and the like. The problem is at grassroots level. There's not enough youngsters being introduced and brought through from schoolboy up to SL level

I agree mate although i would also like to see the amateur season to run at the same time as our's in order to attract more youngster's into our sport.

Exactly, there aren't enough English players in every super league teams first squads. If there was a two player limit on overseas guys at Super League clubs then on average there would be 5 or 6 more English player in their teams and their would be 25 Englishmen/French average men per team. The salary cap means that teams can only afford to employ so many players and the teams need quality players quickly, therefore they opt for established overseas men alot of the time in their quest for glory instead of waiting for their own boys to develop to the required standard. If we had a limit on 2 then Super League teams would have no option than to develop their own players. It may lower the standard for a few years, but it would quickly be brought back up and the numbers of British players available for selection for natioanl honours would also rise.

Nothing in there to harmonise rules and interpretations between the NRL and SL.

Ridiculous.

You've missed my point completely. The problem isn't the overseas players. It's the lack of young english players of a quality to mean the signing of these overseas players becomes unnessasary. If we had the players coming through the ranks in decent numbers we wouldn't even require quotas as it's likely overseas players would start to be come a novelty in the league instead of the norm

Yeah, exactly because the quota limit is so high the English clubs dont seem it nessasary to develop their players in high numbers because they can get a lad in in that's already developed, because they don't have to wait for him then. Like I said, reduce our quota and get large numbers of our kids through and ready for Super League, thiswill then in turn benefit our national teams. Youve only got to look at ours amongst other clubs over reliance of overseas players in recent years as opposed to young British kids to see why we are not getting large numbers of quality Brits to choose from when it's time for international selection. This is because instead of developing into quality players in first grade they have been stalling in the reserves in favour of a overseas lad. We've got to reduce it to fit so our teams are forced to develop their own kids. Otherwise nothing will ever change.
