New coach - Which direction???? : Sat May 23, 2009 5:22 pm
OK, I'm in the camp that believes we need a new coach. This isn't based on results alone but if we continue in our current direction we could be back to pre-Super League crowds which is something none of us want (those old enough to remember). I blame the transfer policy for leading us to our current position because if you sign players from 'lesser teams', eventually you will become one yourself!!!! When was the last time we signed a player the quality of Hape, Big Les, Big Joe????? (Sol excluded although he has been a disappointment)

The club needs a boost and I believe a new coach with new ideas may help in achieving this, but who are the candidates

Brian Mac - Back to his roots, I'd welcome him after the work he has done in London

Brain Noble - It's looking like the boot for him from the Pie Eaters

An Aussie???

Personally I don't believe that Noble is all he's cracked up to be and if you look at his 'offspring' they have hardly set the World alight (Stevie Mac, Jimmy Lowes, Karl Harrison). Brian Smith however is a different story with Tony Smith, Mick Potter and our own Matty Elliot all graduating from the '92 Bronco's side to the upper echelons of coaching (Brian Mac was also under him at Leeds)

Cutting to the point I'd be looking at a young assistant coach at Newcastle or..... you heard it here first Andrew Johns. As far as I know he's still waiting for a big coaching break and we may be able to offer him a step closer towards an NRL job....... After all, that's what Matty Elliot was after

Anyway, keep on supporting the lads, we'll turn it around (eventually)

Andrew Johns? Do we really want to replace a coach who doesn't have the experience with a total rookie coach? Doesn't seem sensible to me.

Brian Noble? Would going backwards really move us forward?

Brian Mac? Why would he leave Quins where he's the man, he's got everything running how he wants and they're building up their momentum

Noble would be better IMO, but wouldn't be over the moon. Would not suprise me if he was back next season, as you said doubt he is guna stay at the pies next season.
As Brian Mac, doubt he'd leave quins.
Aussies? dunno who is available come the end of the season, doubt Johns would come over and he might be worse than Macca, woulod be a huge gamble.
So who knows but I'd give Macca til the end of the season n assess things but I think he time has run.

Johns - Forgive me but wasn't Matty Elliott a rookie coach???? I appreciate that he came over with Smith but Brian was only here for a year. Don't let experience cloud your judgement, look at Huddersfield. He's also a big name that would help to recruit players. As far as I am aware he's worked with the likes of Canterbury, Newcastle and Parramatta, since his retirement, in a coaching role

Brian Mac - He's from Yorkshire and spent ten years at the club. Perhaps he realises that Quins have a ceiling whereas he can be the saviour at Odsal. A sticking point may be that he is under contract till 2011

I am merely suggesting these names but feel free to throw anymore into the ring

You miss the point I was making about the Noble 'Disciple's mate............ They've all failed which would explain why he sank

Let's look for a new direction. Without checking contracts etc what about Millward, The Penguin (also a member of the '92 side under Smith)???? Using your terminology at the moment we're sinking quicker than the titanic

What have we got to lose in giving John's a leg up in his quest to make it in the NRL????

Penguin. . . . . ACE!

They'd be no messing about with dropping players who don't perform with him.

Can you image his "discussions" with the Director of Referees

Probably couldn't do worse than we are at the moment . . . though in all seriousness, probably not a smart move . . . . no matter how potentially entertaining it could be :D . . . . . . . so it could happen then

I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying.
