The wigan playoff game : Wed Jul 08, 2009 11:54 pm
I think this game had more of an impact than first thought.

In 2007 you were really good. (most people will simply say ''crap since 05, but it's not true) You beat saints, beat leeds, CC semi, challenging for top spot and 2nd until the CC semi.

Then in the playoffs you played great and were thrashing wigan, you looked set to challenge foir a gf.........then the collapse happened and it's never been the same.

With the same strength team in 08 you were poor and never got going, again in 2009 similiar strength and even worse.

The wigan game was the first real collapse but since then it's become the norm, clocking off during games and throwing them away etc etc.

The Wigan game may have had more significance than we think, I really don`t know to be honest, but to suggest that the `08 and `09 teams were as strong as in the previous years is way off beam. Even the `07 team was far weaker than the last title winning side in `05. At the start of this season I did feel we had a better mix than in the previous year, however results suggest otherwise. But it`s not until you look at the players leaving since we last won the title, Lowes, Withers, Pryce, Peacock, Fielden (what player he WAS) Hape and Vainikolo and then consider the make up of the side now I think you will see the real reason why things are not what they were.

I can accept failure, but I can't accept not trying.

James Lowes wasn't in the last title winning side.

Dropkick Murphy..we actually saw and heard a mass of bouncing and scarf and flag waving to Dale Cavese that drowned out anything we could muster.. It stopped us singing our own celebratory songs, it died out seconds later when we accepted we couldn't be heard over the Wigan lot
Celebrations muted from us, job done from them. Most fans who slag them off are jealous their own club's support is nowhere near that good
-
sally cinnamon..Why not discuss Wigan? It's a rugby league message board. Wigan are the most famous brand in rugby league
-
Tre Cool..Saints fans are hopeless unless it's a cup final or grand final. Wigan fans are so much more loyal and passionate
-
the flying biscuit..Wires havent been massively succesful over the years, but I've spoke to Brian Bevan And he spoke to me and i wouldnt swap that for Wigans History, ever
-
Ande..on the TV i could only hear the Wigan fans with about 10 to go

Hmm two play-off games last year, one against you. The game after we beat you 31-30 at Hull was pretty good. Beating Leeds away last year. Saints at murrayfield this year. Drawing saints away at the end of last year to get in the play-offs in 4th place. Wakey away in the cup. All very good moments and games since then.

I`m sure you`re right mate, I didn`t look anything up it was just off the top of my head. I may have missed an odd name out as well so I think the comparison still stands.

The comparison is fine but even without alot of the title winning players in 2007 you were very good. The wigan playoff game happened and you've been very poor ever since.
