Looking for a coach that can coach

: Sat Mar 28, 2009 11:40 am
When the ball is kicked out on the full it doesn't result in a scrum.
In general play and not on the 5th what does it result in?

Ive seen Alibert ref 2 Quins games this year and to be honest have enjoyed the games. He lets the game flow. Having said that at times he can be a bit weak and his hand signals need to improve.

Having done a bit of reffing the most difficult decisions for me were when the ball comes lose when there are players on the floor. You are unsighted. To give a penalty, which is what sky were suggesting last night, when you haven't seen an offence cannot be right, no matter what you may be thinking. Additionally the ball carrier has a duty to protect the ball.

Doubt everything, even this

Unfortunately, this thread suggests otherwise. You've launched a diatribe against M Alibert's alleged incompetence based on

1) he reffed the offside in exactly the same way as every other ref in the world, talking to players, telling them they're offside and warning them not to get involved in play

2) your personal opinion that a player who wasn't interfering with play, was - based solely on the evidence that Danny Brough kicked out on the full. I've watched Danny play many times over the years: when he' good, he's brilliant; but he is a mercurial player more than capable of kicking out on the full on his own.

My comment stands. ;)

This is a massive part of the problem, Eddie and Stevo, and Phil increasingly are becoming more and more inane in their commentary, and are more and more often adopting the bias of commentating as a fan of one side or another rather than just calling the game.

I hate to do this but at least for the most part the ocker commentators call the game, if the ref makes a bad call, they say its a bad call AND THEN MOVE ON, they dont harp back to it time and time again

Those people on this board, who drove the superb Ashley Klein out of this country with their ridiculous and relentless denunciations and taunts (remember "Ashley Klown"?), should take a good look in the mirror before they start asking where the good referees have gone.

As for M. Thierry Alibert, he is renowned as an affable man with a good command of English (certainly better than some of the dopes on here), who loves to share a beer with fans after the game. I suspect that the nastiness of some of the commentary on here, with its xenophobic undertones, is going to make that nice personal touch a little less likely from now on.

I totaly agree with every word of that, thought the ref was a totaly clueless at times for both sides, but hey i don't care.

RL won last night :)

I think your right in that it didn't influence the outcome and RL won. However when a ref allows that much lattitude for off sides and laying on teams like Saints are more likely to benefit. Not because they are dirty but because they are smart. The refs job is to use the rules to create as level a playing field as possible. He failed to do that thus Saints got a few more scoring chances than they didn't desrve and promptly put them to bed as expected.

Saints were better than us but not 30 points IMHO - but as you say it makes no odds, Trinity players hearts were in it but their heads were clearly in bits. Had it been otherwisw it might have been closer.

Just like to remind everyone that all emotion aside that Trinity team was still 8 first teamers short, most notably Brad Drew and THREE first choice props which I thought most telling against a big Saints pack.

Finally James Graham was superb, I really don't care what the NRL propagandist will say I think he is one of the tbest props in the world and was a major difference.
