Anyone else seen the Opening ceremony preview pics on the RLWC2013 twitter account. They look very impressive!

Yep. If the place looks like that in reality it WILL be impressive. Here's hoping for a suitably impressive turnout by supporters.

Apparently the opening ceremony has cost around £1 million but has been paid for by grants from the Arts Council, the Welsh government and Wooden Spoon, the official charity for the tournament. Should be good!

With an average of less than two posts a year, I don't think you'll be noticed...

Re: World Cup Ticket Sales : Sun Sep 29, 2013 11:12 am
A big congrats to the WC organisers for getting around 40k sold for the opener already. I understand a large majority were bought by non-heartland residents.

By default, this is forcing the hand of regular RL fans to put their money where there mouth is and buy tickets. They won't be able to start endless threads about what a farce it is and why the RL should have opened at Huddersfield or Elland Road.

I expect tickets sales for the opener to soar after the GF (remember we have 3 weeks of nothing but the build up to the opener). I am going for a bold prediction of pretty much a sold out Cardiff of around 70k for the double-header.

Hmm, I'd like to agree with you on that but I don't think traditional fans will travel to Cardiff in large numbers. If we could get 2/3 of the Magic Weekend Cardiff crowds down, it would sell out easily. However, I don't think they will... 60k is my prediction.

I think you will be surprised. I read somewhere that in 1995 only 12k had been sold for the Wembley opener 10 days out from the match and the crowd topped 41k. Also, that more than 30k tickets were shifted in a week that year between the semi final and final.

When the club stuff has stopped and people are sitting around with this in their faces etc. It is easy to sit on your sofa and moan when Cardiff is going to be empty but quite different if 50K+ pre-sales gets posted a couple of weeks out from the game.

I also don't think we should underestimate Welsh (local) ticket sales in the last 3 weeks before the game. It is not often they get something like this on their doorstep.

There's posters hanging in different parts of Wigan now advertising the QF game here. Must have seen at least 10 different posters hanging off lamp posts.

I really hope you are right. Welsh sales have been going fairly well so far. A small example is Maesteg School who have shifted 250 tickets in a week. But the traditional fans are the key to a great crowd rather than a good crowd at Cardiff. If they start to buy in significant numbers post-GF, we'll have a belting crowd...
