The top fighters and more importantly their managers, use the different belts to help increase the purse.
Also, if they can hang on to one or two belts, they can still claim to be world champion.
Of course, when there is a unification bout, they either need to be confident of winning or get a heap of cash (or both).
Although it may be better for the fans to watch a bout where everything is on the line, the promoters are happy for the titles to be spread about so they can put on a title bout more often.
