110 years 4,163 spectators. Salford must merge or relegate. : Sat Apr 25, 2009 7:32 pm
This was a truly shocking day for Salford.
I am not refering to their defeat at the hands of a very mediocre Hull FC.
I am refering to the fact that after years in second division, then returning, after defeating last years champions at Headlingley, after more than 100 years of professional rugby league, Salford can only attract 4,163 spectators.
On a sunny Saturday evening Salford attracts a mere 4,163 spectators. And that includes hundreds of Hull FC fans!
Isn't it time we cut out the wishful thinking, and recognise that in its current guise in Super League, Salford's days are numbered. A new stadium at Barton will not save it. The game is up. Nobody cares about Salford City Red Devils.
What is the solution?
The club must merge with Oldham to form Manchester United Rugby League. It must recruit children and teens from all over the greater Manchester area. Only then can the stadium at Barton ever have a chance of being filled.
