Surely with a French team winning it new and higher quality sponsors would be tripping over themselves to get involved as wasn’t that one of the arguments of what Catalans bring?

£20 a ticket and £15 on beer and merchandise.....so an away fan is worth £35. At best, 1,000 is the average away support split across 11 rounds and I am being really generous here, so Toronto, replacing say Wakefield will cost a SL club £35,000.
The minimum turnover of a SL club is £4,000,000 so Toronto instead of Widnes is worth less than 1% of a SL clubs turnover.

There are many valid reasons for and against expansion into America, but "AWAY FANS" isn't one of them. :BEAT:

In all seriousness, sports sponsorship has been a tough market for a few years now......didn't the 2nd and lower tiers of soccer struggle a while back?

Indeed. The value of the Six Nations has also roughly halved and the Heineken Cup sponsorship has also been cut quite dramatically. Businesses are generally less willing to pay big money for sponsorships, and they're expecting more for that money - things like highly recognisable, media trained personalities for example. Hell, we still don't offer full-pitch digital pitch side advertising at most clubs even though many advertisers expect it.

I know that the Challenge Cup is an RFL property, but they are only able to sell the audience and the quality of product that the clubs provide them. This is an issue that has roots in all of those clubs and chairmen that "don't believe in marketing", and there's only so much that the RFL can do to polish that turd.

Warrington led 16-2 in Saturday's Grand Final, but their joy was short-lived as Wigan roared back to win the Super League title and extend the Wire's 58-year wait to be champions

Ladbrokes have agreed a 4 year multi-event sponsorship deal with the PDC. Bye bye RL, hello darts. Good work by the Hearns :)

Another potential iceberg up ahead.

The RGA (of which Betfred are a member) are meeting to discuss a voluntary code for reducing the level of betting advertising....

Among the changes reportedly on the agenda include a limit of one gambling ad per commercial break, a total ban on gambling ads before the 9pm watershed, and banning all in-play betting ads during sports matches (guess Bet365 pitchman Ray Winstone will have to go back to making movies).

Whether or not "ads before the 9pm watershed" applies to sports sponsorship or not, we may soon find out.

As for the Ladbrokes thing, it's not the first time that Ladbrokes have sponsored PDC events. Surely the biggest question is why didn't Ladbrokes see value in renewing its sponsorship with RL, when we're supposedly a good demographic fit?

"Chip on both shoulders" or, at least I think that's the one you may be thinking of ?
Or maybe, the company that was to sponsor the Wolves victory parade after their emphatic GF win.

Ladbrokes obviously see darts as a better draw than rugby league

It's not hard to see why darts works for bookmakers. It's essentially one TV event with four to six matches per event - that's four to six times the number of markets that the same number of hours of RL content can offer.
