I also very much doubt that would be a sackable offence. From memory, when Ferris when extra curricular, he was shipped out to anyone who would sign him.

According to Gary Carter on Twitter it was due to a drugs issue. Doesn't say whether it was recreational or performance enhancing though.

FFS there are no legal recreational drugs, no wonder the country is messed up if some people believe there is a difference.
