Bougainville : Sat Dec 14, 2019 5:28 am
So Bougainville Island has voted overwhelmingly to separate from PNG.
It is an Island to the North of Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Fiji in the Melanesian region, and to the east of PNG.
They are about half the size and have half the population of Fiji, but they have the world's largest copper mine on the Island, so are potentially richer than most Pacific countries.
Bougainville has been a nursery for many great rugby league players, including Kumuls representatives Michael Mom, Bernard Wakatsi, Joe Katsi, Lauta Atoi (now the Honourable Member for North Bougainville), and Chris Siriosi (former Chief Secretary of the Autonomous Bougainville Government).
Basically, when and if PNG agree to their independence, they will become the second country on earth with RL as their national sport.

It's not a done deal yet.

PNG government have to sign it off and they don't have a good history with Bougainville.

Let's hope they get what they want.

PNG will do whatever the Australians tell them to do or more accurately what the UK/US/Australian mining corporations tell them to do. Will be interesting.

This is an embarrassingly incorrect post. Last year one of the biggest gold mines in recent history was unearthed in Mongolia yet the corporations had to dance to the tune of the Mongolian government, not the other way around like vasty has just claimed
