i was wondering what had happened, whether it was a freak accident or whether he'd been upended/dirty play cos i've not heard ANYONE say anything about it, it's been unusually quiet.

Someone has put a clip of the incident on twitter, its so innocuous you wouldn't believe it.

Freak accident no players to blame looked norhing but play stopped for a good 10 minutes so you knew it was a serious injury just hope he gets a full recovery

They are saying an artificial disc in his neck failed and pinched his spinal cord, so the operation was to deal with that.

Today's Times reckoned he'd had three discs replaced. I'm astonished he was playing if this is right.

it shouldn't of been allowed, I always thought it was bad enough with Barry and his false eye getting hit broadside not seeing it coming but he held his own on the field but artificial discs is asking for trouble, this could of easily gone in training

I aren't an expert on these things. I don't know if this is unprecedented or more common than you realise, but he must have had the all clear from a doctor to be able to play.

For me it just provides even more proof (as if it were needed) of just how brave these guys are, and how the rewards for what they do are pitifully low given what they put themselves through.

IIRC Widnes rougharse Emosi Koloto was forced to retire when a second, or maybe third, disc needed replacing. So playing on after that type of op isn't unprecedented though the outcome Masoe suffered might be.

My astonishment is on a number of levels - that the medics would ok it, that a club would sign him, that a coach would pick him, that an insurer would cover him...

I'm not astonished that he would choose to play. Like many players, his toughness and courage is almost a given. I just hope he's ok.

Most of these repairs are generally stronger than the original. When I broke my ankle and had it pinned the Doctor stated that if it was ok after six month it would be almost impossible to break it again.

Whether that’s the case with these discs I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Sometimes things just happen, a freak incident.

To answer your point, it really looked like nothing, certainly no hint of any kind of foul play.

I was quite close and didn't notice a thing at first, there was no noise or any signs of concern from the players involved, the game just moved on.

The only thing of note was that the trainers???? got over pretty sharpish, maybe there trained eyes saw something we didn't.

I don't want to sound flip but it looked no more physical than having a bit of a muck around with your kids, certainly less than on a training drill, it looked to me as an untrained eye that he could have done it anywhere. Maybe, if you were really close in it may have looked worse but I'm struggling tbh. Nobody at the time could imagine it was so serious.

Tragic, hope the lad ends up with the best result and can at least walk again, RL isn't important.

Re: Mose Masoe suffers spinal injury : Sun Jan 19, 2020 2:45 am
I’ve seen the tackle where it happened and it looked to me that Mose took a shoulder/bicep from one of his own players to the face that knocked his head back abruptly. It was only by slowing it and pausing it I could see this.

Purely accidental mind you. There is no blame on the field of play. I really do wish Mose the best. Absolutely gutted for him but he seems like an upbeat guy and that’s exactly the attitude that will help him through this.
