As you pass through Tyldesley, there are a small number of ale spots worth noting. At the moment, I'm planning a stop here to check out on two of these. The Queens has one ale (unknown as yet) and a pool table. A Punch House so no more.
The Mort arms is recognisably Holts and unspoiled with a nationally noted tap room. Not that drinkers in Salford, north Manchester or Eccles would be suprised by a superbly preserved Holts house (we may have one or two dozen) but I know some Salford fans I meet drink the odd gallon of Holts.
Another Holts house if the Half Moon, recognisably old and with a outside patio that may be useful when summer arrives (usually early October).
Lastly, the Union Arms. An Allgates pub (like the White Lion in Leigh), it also does food. Allgates do look after their pubs.
Further back in the town, for those after Thwaites is the Gate House.
I'll mention Atherton as some of you may find yourselves there.
Nine pubs serve real ale.
Worth mentioning are The Atherton Arms which is Holts and has the reputation of an excellent pint (mmm? as good as that in the Lamb or Grapes?) and a snooker table.
The Jolly Nailor is another Allgates pub. So recommended.
Hard to find (you go through a narrow alley from Market Street, roughly opposite the Jolly Nailor) is the Pendle Witch which serves the FULL RANGE of Moorhouses (so I expect a visit by the Kray twins).
Further down Market St is a "Pound Pub" but it rarely serves real ale.
On the way to Leigh from the centre are the Punch Bowl which is a quite a large looking pub with one real ale; the bright white Letters Inn with two real ales; and the modern Talbot which focuses on food with Pedigree and Jennings.
