The point I am trying to make really is how much more could be made if they sold a good selection of beers like Erdinger or Warsteiner, £3 wouldn't be too bad if it was that.

The club is tied in with Carlsberg-Tetley, I guess. Thus ruling this out.

Everything's a bit more expensive at the KC from what I can remember. Don't know how you all afford it.

First accept sadness. Realise that without losing 70% of the time, winning wouldn't be such a relief.

Re: £2.50 for Carlsberg, in a can! : Wed Jan 26, 2011 12:24 pm
I think beer pricing has become totally distorted due to the shear volume supermarkets sell. I remember having to pay about £4.50 at an off-license for 4 cans of lager 25 years ago. :shock: A friend of mine in the industry tells me the supermarkets absolutely screw their profit margins to the floor. He told me there is no negotiation, the buyer names his cost and says take the business or walk away. It's all about extremely high volume and low margin to the supermarket chains.

Supermarkets also don't have anywhere near the same running costs as a pub on a litre for litre or pint for pint basis. I think most people realise this and accept that pubs need to make more profit to cover their costs. As bizzare as it sounds independent drinking establishments could actually buy cans and bottles much cheaper from the supermarket than directly from the brewery. (But can't because their contract with the brewery would be terminated if they got caught) And they need the brewery for the draft beers and spirits.

Near perfect analsysis there. My only point would be to emphasise that in many cases, pubs are owned by 'pub companies' and not breweries although I recognise this is pure pedantry on my part as the cause and effect is just the same. (That's not to say that the brave aren't capable of buying the odd barrel or two from external 'white van man' suppliers in exchange for an accounting headache and improved profit margin.)

Sad preacher nailed upon the coloured door of time;
Insane teacher be there reminded of the rhyme.
There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify;
Political ends, as sad remains, will die.

I know from where you are coming but several pub companies operate in the same bullying fashion as supermarkets.

Well you can drink fizz that only is palatable when it is so cold your taste buds are handicapped, or the stuff that allows proper appreciation of a heritage and excellence from craftsmen and women. :IDEA:

How can the club be charging some much for a 440mL can of Carlsberg!!!

(1)Probably due to the fact that some people will pay that price.

(2)The Chairman/Club need to raise money to fund the playing side etc.

I was referring to independent club/pub licensed establishments like the Willows rather than pub chains.

Re: £2.50 for Carlsberg, in a can! : Wed Jan 26, 2011 4:55 pm
I'm saying something here which will hopefully stimulate its own separate topic.

There's a virtual dearth of drinking establishments near the new ground. If one does appear in the future, it's most likely to be a 'Brewers Fayre' type, I would suggest. Nothing wrong with these places, they certainly are OK in the right location - half decent grub without ripping you off, sometimes even cask beer, but again, nothing to get excited about!

So, is there anybody out there, group and/or individual, with the energy, expertise, financial backing, etc. to remedy the situation?

I'd back the right venture with finance (not a huge amount though I'm afraid). I'd imagine that only the Peel Green area would be viable, as it's (just about) walkable from there. Any more ideas? We've got around 12 months, remember - let's have some decent, drinkable beers/ciders available....
