Re: Salford Council : Thu Feb 03, 2011 11:42 am
I am amazed how some people on here try to link this to Swinton Lions.

The original posting was about a £1 million pound loan to Salford not Swinton and the ability for Salford to repay taxpayers money(wich may be in doubt due to economic forces) and then it went on via myself to question if it is correct for the council to be loaning money to as you have quite rightly pointed out a fully professional organisation which should operate in a proper market and be subject to market forces as most businesses are mine included and at a time when real people many of whom will live in Salford and maybe even are Salford fans.

If this was all so transparent and above board why then was it a leaked document that brought it to the attention of the MEN (a sponsor of Salford i believe).

I totally agree with the comments regarding the Lowry and the way it is also funded, it is after all a poor attempt at a small scale Trafford Centre but as the BBC and media city are now paying probably large ammounts of rates to the council i can see they would have wanted some kind of sweetner.

Fact is in the current times of austerity and people loosing Jobs the concil should be looking closely at it's spending, one wonders if any business in Salford would be offered such assistance when cash flow runs out.

As for the stadium good luck to them as of course this is also being funded by outside monies from peel holdings so all the burden isn't falling on the taxpayers shoulders.

Re: Salford Council : Thu Feb 03, 2011 12:08 pm
What is easily forgotten is that around 9 or 10 years ago Salford were looking at alternative grounds, such as Maine Road. Regardless of whether they would have gone out of the city or not, when Salford Council got wind of this, they implored Salford City Reds to stay in Salford. And thus began the relationship. The recession happened at the worst time for the stadium development when it was too far gone to go back.

Someday, somewhere, today’s empires are tomorrow’s ashes.

Re: Salford Council : Thu Feb 03, 2011 12:12 pm
It depends on what you believe the council's role to be, and how you view Salford RLFC. One of the council's roles is to promote the city of Salford, to attract people and investment. One of the ways of increasing people's awareness of a city is for that city to have a successful professional sports club. After all, how many people would have even heard of places like Gillingham and Milton Keynes if they didn't have professional football teams? Fortunately, Salford isn't polluted by professional football, so the biggest professional sports club is SCR. To that extent, Salford RLFC are no ordinary business, and it's in the city's interests to have them in Super League.

First accept sadness. Realise that without losing 70% of the time, winning wouldn't be such a relief.

I am sure the council do look at their spending but the support for a community stadium and the future welfare of the club was provided prior to the announcement of the government spending cuts. You can't undo what's been done just because there has been a recent change in government policy.

this now sounds like a Tory rant, build 9 planes to fly over britain as the first line of defence, pay out £9b and then scrap the lot, what a waste, if they are there use them, the Government are now going to spend £4b buying from the USA.
Same with Salford, £4m already spent preparing the groundworks, just stop building and forget about the money.
Next you will say we should have let the banks go bust,

The USA are building out of Recession, because in the last great crash of 1929 they did nothing resulting in the Depression, this Gov are doing nothing but trying to cut costs to come out of recession, just like Irelend and Greece and look at them two now, where as Salford Council in their wisdom are investing in local projects to maximise growth and build out providing facilities for the future.
One more thing the last Tory lot scraped the Manchester Euro-tunnel high speed link, now will be built at 30 or 40 times the cost, so don't put off today which will cost you more tomorrow.
£20m invested in Phil and his Harmonica is now reaping dividends for Salford with more to come.
