Could the green seats be in there to neutralise the stadium? Could be embarrasing having smaller crowds than secondary tenants in "our" ground.

First accept sadness. Realise that without losing 70% of the time, winning wouldn't be such a relief.

It seems a lot more complicated than just upping sticks and moving to the new Salford stadium, for instance Sale bought Edgeley Park in 2002 and if they did move what would happen to Stockport County and would it stack up financially if only one team (tennent) was playing there?

There was a news story about 3 years ago of Stockport wanting to buy the ground back but nothing came of it. Apparently when Sale bought the ground for 3 million from Stockport there was an agreement made with a ten year option for the football club to buy it back for 4 million. As you can imagine it’s not an ideal situation at Edgeley Park with a lot of resentment from fans of the football club insisting if they were in a position to buy it back Sale would have to go.

I can see the appeal of the new stadium to Sale with it’s modern facilities, extra capacity and a prime location that is nearer to their original roots. They have also had lots of pitch problems with two teams playing on Edgeley Park over the winter months. I know the London Wasps fixture was postponed just before kick-off last November because the pitch was that bad. This lead to a lot of remedial work with talk of an estimated £500’000 having to be spent to re-lay the pitch this summer.

The question is are Sale as interested as they make out or are they using this as a lever with Stockport Council to either build them a new ground or to help them financially to redevelop Edgeley Park? Or is their interest genuine with the hope Stockport County with possible help from the Council will step in and buy Edgeley Park back from them?

There was a lot of talk in the past of Manchester United reserves possibly playing at Barton but I've not heard it mentioned for some time now.

Even though there's a couple of things I'm not keen on with the design, seeing the pictures for the first time in a very long time I actually had a twinge of pride.

Lets see if those involved can keep their sh*t together and actually build it now.

The Northwest Regional Development Agency was dealt a blow as the government announced it was slicing £52m from its annual budget. The cuts amount to 18 per cent of the agency's overall budget, and chief executive Steven Broomhead said that some projects that had been promised cash would now end up losing out.

‘Our budget for 2010/11 is already 90 more than per cent committed and we will be forced to review some projects that have already been approved.’

I wouldn't have thought so because the work has actually started as a result of them signing it off. I wouldn't have thought it legal to be able to cancel the funding several weeks after work has actually started on site. Also the 4m from the NWDA for remediation work I believe is a loan and not a grant, if that makes a difference I'm not sure?

Just wondering though if this decision could affect St Helens because they also have an agreement but they haven't actually started their remediation work? They have started with some roundabout but haven't demolished the old buildings yet to allow them to start with the remediation.

It is. I've worked on grant awarding projects in the past where we've had to pull funding that we'd offered to businesses because someone at regional level had done their sums wrong and the purse holder was clawing back what they could. Where I currently work we've also had to lose members of staff because funding has been pulled from projects that are already underway. It's usually a caveat in the smallprint.

You are referring to grants though, this is an agreed loan.

I would think it's more likely that funding for work that hasn't started will be pulled first. The cost of the remediation work so far must be in the region of £650,000 if you consider 4m for 6 months work. That would be a lot of money for local government to write-off.
e.g. We will cancel that 4m loan and it will cost us about £650K at local government level, false economy for the government surely?

Are you sure that the remediation is a loan? I thought it (or some of it) was NWDA contaminated land grant funded. The stadium construction (or again, a portion) will be local government loan. For what it's worth, I think we'll be ok as the contact was awarded in the last financial year.

I have my own manufacturing business in Rochdale & secured a 3 part grant for investment in people & equipment, our first payment was given in the middle of last year securing 22 jobs through the NWDA. The second & third part of our grant already approved is now under threat, we know we have lost the third phase but think with all cuts, even though the second phase has been approved we believe is also about to be cut.
