Lubricating your lobby : Tue Aug 09, 2016 3:59 pm
I'll post a guide to the pubs of central Leigh later. If you're travelling by bus to Leigh centre, this may help for the walk to the ground. May I also mention you could stop in Tyldesley which has two Holts houses (again more later) which might JUST put a smile on Walshy. My knowledge is of only one of the pubs on the route so I did a bit of researchSo, for the esteemed John...
As you reach Leigh, by the bus station is the Spinning Jenny which is a large pub on the route from the bus station to the ground. CAMRA states 4 or 8 (according to another CAMRA site) ales can be obtained here. The website really pushes food, sports on the TV screens and “Looking for a banging night in Leigh - look no more! We've got DJs every Thursday, Friday, Saturday AND Sunday night to ensure your time off is a fun filled night.” Prices are supposed to be comparable to Wetherspoons.
[Another pub by the bus station is the George and Dragon (a Tudor façade makes it obvious) on the walk along King Street away from the stadium. (If you use the map on WhatPub, you’ll end up at a Lloyds bank). Blonde Witch and 2 (3? same problem with sites) other ales.]
From the bus station, you head south-west to the ground by King Street to cross the canal.
As you approach the bridge over the Bridgewater, look for the Waterside on Canal Street. It’s a converted warehouse. It serves 4 ales (5 ales?, guess what, again another CAMRA site) WHICH INCLUDES Greene King IPA (a happy MichiganRed).
Over the canal bridge and you are on St Helens road.
The next real ale pub is the Britannia on said road. It has been reported to sell 2 ales. What Pub reports it has “interesting alcoves” (Charlie Caroli might know what this means).
Then it’s a walk and a bit. As you get to the sports village, you will find the Whistling Wren which serves food and at least Jennings Bitter and Marston’s Pedigree plus others. It has a play area. Are the Rosso brothers coming? Seems to have a two for one menu.
Leigh central (especially the White Lion) to come.
