The centre (not counting the Spinning Jenny and the George and Dragon):Most of the interesting real ale in Leigh is north of the town centre.
Does anyone know if the Bobbin has reopened?
Going up King Street you will find a road called Lord Street on your right. There is no similarity with Lord Street in Southport.
Two pubs serve this road: a Yates’ which has one beer (and say no more) and the Musketeer. The latter is a typical Holts pub with the vault on the right.
Back to the road going north.
King Street becomes Market Place and it is here that the jewel in the real ale crown is found: The White Lion. Opposite the parish church, this Allgates house serves through 6 hand pumps real ale and a real cider. It’s nice and quiet. Note another site states 7 hand pumps. My apologies go here to the Kray brothers who really like this pub and its quietness. But it’s too good to leave out.
Just before this pub is the Boars Head. A superb building, it served me real ale at my last visit. It also has really comfortable sofas. Containing a real hotbed of Leigh fans, there is transport from here to the ground.
Further up the road (not turning right along the Avenue, you will reach Leigh’s Wetherspoon’s … the Thomas Burke. Every guide tells you why it is so named and I’m bored with reading it. Ten hand pumps. And Greene King for MichiganRed. The dining area is raised and .. well if you do not know what to expect from a cinema like Wetherspoons …
The Wagon and Horses is too far for a comfortable visit: over towards Fir Park on Wigan Road, it serves Hydes.
