It was a complete fiddle to stop the bottom teams going down/broke. Trouble is it affected 2 clubs not on the M62 corridor.
Huddersfield merged with Sheffield to become Huddersfield-Sheffield Giants (name lasted one season)
Hull Sharks merged with Gateshead to become Hull FC
Gateshead Thunder reformed as Newcastle Thunder
Sheffield Eagles reformed as Sheffield Eagles.
Only the RFL etc ...
Reminds me of the proposed merger between Warrington and Widnes. We could be Cheshire Wolves now
