Salford 6-26 Wigan. I actually fancied Salford for this given Wigan had been struggling.

Salford were missing Croft and lost a couple during the game.

They've got a load of players out. They'd have beaten Wigan with a decent lineup.

Who knows they might have, then again....

I actually went to the game yesterday and for the first quarter Salford were on the front foot both in attack and defence and more than a match for Wigan in both facets of the game. Wigan's lead was fortuitous as it was inevitable if there can be such a paradox.

My takeaways from the game were that aggressive defence worked for both sides and Wigan got on top when Salford adopted our passive approach. When Salford were on top, Wigan held firm didn't panic they carried on playing their game to their structure waiting for a break in the belief that they'd eventually prevail.

Yes, Wigan seemed to get the rub of the green and the referee's calls but ultimately it was their professionalism that ensured that they collected the points.

Mmmm
Not sure I'd agree with Salford being on the front foot 1st Quarter and/or that we/Wigan were fortuitous to being front at half time.
Apart from the try they scored I don't remember our defence being stretched or that I was worried at any point that Salford were getting on top, and 2 tries to 1 was a fair reflection

2nd half Wigan did to Salford what they did well for 55/60 mins against Wire week before.
We made good metres each set and Harry Smiths kicking game tested Salford/penned then in their own 10/15 and pressurised Salford into trying to push things.
In fairness to Salford I thought they'd go side to side and look for miracle offloads earlier than what they did (As per Rowleys natural instincts) so they didn't panic, but Farrells 2nd try I think killed the game on the hour mark
Don't really remember Salford creating too much 2nd half, think Budgie had a half break but was wrapped up comfortably

I'll try and clarify/explain the text that you highlighted in my post although to be fair it should be read in context and to reaffirm I'm not having a pop at Wigan. It was an OK performance from you with a lesson or two to learned for us as our defence is passive and we have a recent tendency to panic.

What I meant by Salford being on the front foot was that they were matching you particularly in aggressive defence. I was sat on the Salford 20 and most of the action was or seemed to be below me in the first quarter. I agree that they didn't look like breaching your line and didn't suggest that they were rampaging.

On the fortuitous bit, my view may have been coloured by the home fans view of the refereeing as I was sat with them I'm not going into stats here just a feeling but a couple of six agains, pens, balls going into touch off their player seemed to fall for you, then you score. As I said "professionalism".

The second half was a complete none event for me as a neutral and the home fans knew they were well beaten, so well done you. guys.

Fair assessment. On the ref point: I've just watched the match back and he got pretty much everything right apart from 2 missed (very) forward passes from Salford. You could question the penalty against Burgess on Field but he did tackle him them pick him back up and slam him down in a second effort so didn't look good. Other than that, he made the right calls. Just goes to show how a viewpoint is coloured on the day by who you support or, in this case, which fans you sit with.

I'm not a ref critic 99% of the time, and I paid a bit more attention in this game as A.Moores first game I think reffing Wigan was of interest as Liams a good friend of ours and we've enjoyed (mmmm) many hours debating stuff.
I thought the ref did well, I got frustrated with the 6 agains both ways but that's no different than every other game I watch were it just seems so random.
But I don't think there were any Controversial calls and the Budgie one you ref in this climate was always going to be a pen for 2 reasons, 1 was it was a 2nd effort, 2 he come down into fields head/face with his hand/arm deliberately (it wasn't a bad one I.e. a forearm or elbow). It just looked like he'd lost his rag and was frustrated, penalty, move on.
