Where do you think the rot is?
I think it's wider than KF. It's more endemic, almost in the fabric of the place which reflects in the standards set and the fans mindset. A good example is the appointment of a DOR - which was exactly the right move but the choice of candidate was classic Warrington. I would love to know the recruitment process behind that.
You've answered it for me W71.
I don't think 'rot' was the best term I could have used. It's maybe a little insulting to those at the top who've tried hard to achieve success for the club. However, I think we're a place where players come, earn a lot more money than they would otherwise, with a lot less pressure from the benefactors. I think this was evident from Mulhern's wage demands. He's
okay as player, but he wants a slice of the crazy money pie that he sees others eating from. And if a player gets that slice at Warrington, they get it on a long-term future-securing deal which means they can (intentionally or otherwise) totally take their foot off the gas. And when we yet again fail to achieve the total sum of our expensive parts, the benefactors just seem to take it in their stride.
I thought the move to bring Powell in was a statement of intent, but then after he failed to sort out the culture (which he acknowledged after the Wakefield game) the club releases a statement claiming they maybe didn't treat the players shipped out as well as they could. Personally I think Toby King was treated magnificently. His punishment for underperforming and the couple of 'cultural misdemeanours' off the field, was to ship him to another top team and make up the difference of his salary to ensure he didn't lose out. We'd have been better dropping him and bringing in a cheap replacement, until he realised what he had to change to play first-team rugby again.
We'll see how Burgess goes, because if neither he or Powell can sort out this comfort-culture, I really don't know what we are supposed to do.
