Sorry ...I thought it was too obvious to say. But basically you talk to them and you give 'em a chance to up the effort and then they are playing in the reserves.

I'd have thought that would have been part of a new coaches initial speech to the squad upon their arrival, and we are 7 games in. Some of this squad for Hull KR should already be playing reserve grade rugby this weekend, you cannot make threats and not carry them out, but with a salary cap, a contract system and a board to answer to, there's very few SL coaches with the bo££ox to drop players to the reserves. It's very easy for us sat behind a screen and keyboard to say that would be what we'd do, but in practice it's not exactly the easy solution to our problem.

But what if you give 5 the chance and 5 dont. Do you do 5 in the reserves like Mr Catpiss suggested but was knocked back. I'm intrigued

To be honest I am surprised that Powell suggested that it was an effort thing. Coaches say all sorts of things that they regret. If he really thinks it is an effort thing ... he just has to speak to whoever he is thinking of and drop him if there is no improvement. I cannot guess what Powell is thinking really. Just do it and don't talk to the press about it.

Hang on ... it is only Sir Catpiss who picked about 5 to drop. No way would I do that. That is not called for and even old Catpiss backed off on that one after a bit of thought.

firstly, i appreciate the uptitling.
and whilst i did back track on it, the point remains that those players in my opinion are deffo the top picks for kicks up the booty.
having thought about this for a while, something else i'll bring up, everyone was ranting and raving about that 17 minutes vid of the first meeting, how he was laying the law down and it was ace, he mentioned about changing structures, calls on the field and challenging the players, wanting them to go with him (i wonder if this section was released on purpose?) the play on field, and the comments recently suggest that this hasn't bedded in as well as he made made/hoped.
Also, i'm wondering if what he's alluding to, was trying to change the way we play to fit the personnel we've got, you can't play a power game without big bodies (stay with me) so he's trying to implement a more mobile way of shifting opposition defences around, we're all pretty pee'd off at philbin not running straight, and on those arcing lines, cooper was doing it in the league game v wakey as well. i wonder if some of the players aren't buying in to that, and just reverting to whatever.
just a thought. might explain some of the disjointed play and the lack of effort in defence, which has been shocking this last couple of weeks.

This is what I'd convinced myself of, over the winter, especially when it became apparent we weren't signing another prop. I'd still like to believe it, but my faith in it eroded quite quickly, even as early as the Wigan friendly.
I do believe the players aren't buying into his game plans, whatever they may be. It's going to take time and I hope he's given that time to implement his plans and weed out the players that aren't complying.
I am with you FMC. To add to that I think Darryl Clark has been asked to play a different game. I think he has been told that if there is a quick play the ball instead of jumping out of DH to get the ball wide quickly. Somebody posted the wakefield tackle stats for their forwards in another thread and it was half what our forwards were doing (yes I know we are light in the pack) but there is a definite move to get the ball out wide quickly. I hope it is this rather than players being vexed because they have to stand up in front of the group and read a chapter of a book. When things aren't going great then players tend to try and solve the problems on their own rather than collectively. You can see that from the vid of the wakey try that was posted. Lots of players trying to solve problems from the moment Mulhern shot out and currie didn't and Davis didnt get across from marker. One thing for sure it will be interesting to see how it all ends up but the players are not covering themselves in glory at the moment.

Good call, and I did wonder this myself, whether we were going to try and move bigger teams around and burn some juice. Not seen it so far, in fact our diminutive forwards have an unerring knack of heading back into heavy traffic rather hitting defenders two out from the ptb where they might have a chance of a tackle bust, quick ptb or offload.
