I think it would have been feasible to sell up to 20k tickets for this game.
I am going to buy 3 tickets tomorrow, as we only have 3 season tickets. Had we have been able to get 2 per person I would have got 6, and had we been allowed more, we could have possibly have taken a group of 10 or 12, and made it a family day out, especially with it being my birthday that weekend.
The problem that the RFL had was the lack of suitable grounds around that capacity. If Saints ever get their 18k capacity stadium, I have no doubts that these games would be played there.
The way the ticketing arrangements are should allow for all regular fans to attend this match who want to, however it doesn't really allow for a load of new fans (glory hunters, call them what you will) which these games can potentially attract.
I think Saints have more season ticket holders than us, and allow for 4 per ticket. Now seeing as they have plenty of experience of selling tickets for these games, that suggests that they are well aware that there is a decent section of ST holders who do not buy tickets.
