Re: Dec Patton : Sun May 26, 2019 7:55 pm
Patton's performances get a level of micro scrutiny that no other player does but I wonder if on the big picture there is a broad consensus of what Wire fans think.

Does anybody disagree with the statements below?

1. Patton is good enough to be a long term option as a starting halfback in SL for a mid/lower table team.
2. In a team with aspirations to win the title, he's a squad player at best. He has value as a third halfback to understudy the main two, especially if he can kick goals and also cover dummy half.
3. He's young, but he's not THAT young, and he's had a lot of games, enough for us to get a sense of his ceiling, he's not going to be a world beater.
4. As a town, Warrington hasn't produced much halfback talent, and Patton is the best Warrington born halfback in donkey's years. Hence most of us would like him to do well. But that doesn't change the points above.
5. He started this season as third halfback, behind Austin and Brown. He will start next season as third halfback, behind Austin and Widdop. He faces the career choice defined by points 1 and 2 above - if he wants to be a starting halfback he will have to move to a lower table club.

Very reasoned post, Sally. Don't get to see enough of The Wire in real life to make a decent call but, as a television onlooker, can't demur. Like your post, style and grammar.

:thumb:

BTW, regarding Point Five, as The Trannies are peevishly taking back Ryan to lie fallow for the season, Leigh could do with another back......

...... Is Austin available?
