I remember thinking at times that Steve Price (appointed aged 40) didn’t seem significantly older than some senior players and wondered if ultimately that may have been an issue.

Sam Burgess is 34 ... he may well have to lean on his status in the sport along with a mentor (or two), especially in the early days of his tenure.

I think Sam carries more kudos than Steve Price.

Dual code international and RL enforcer.
NRL winner
Clive Churchill Medal Winner.
NRL team of the decade member 2010-2019.

It doesn’t matter what experiences Slamming is as a coach, it’s about wether he can command the respect, that was obviously missing for DP.
If he commands that respect, the players will tear up bridges for him.

I keep harping back to Alex Ferguson.
He had an aura that players would work for him.

There isn’t anything Sam can be told about playing RL, he’s done it all at the highest level on the biggest stage.
He has forgotten more that most know. As I said, it’s just all about respect.

Burgess might turn out to be the best young coach in the game but he is young and inexperienced.

Having some old heads around him who he trusts and can turn to is essential.

Plus we can just appoint them when we sack Burgess after we've lost the opening 10 games.

One name that hasn’t been mentioned or in connection with any RL jobs is Martin Gleeson - while we’re in the chance our arm hiring saloon - he might be a good shout as an attack coach.

The merry go round starts. Long dismissed as coach of Featherstone.
He’s possibly on his way here.
Powell to Featherstone along with Blake Austin as Marquee if promoted.

If that's true I wish I had Powell's agent...

Obviously only speculation till Abe posts, (or the Club), but if true he could form part of an advance party for Burgess? Not only eyes and ears for our new coach but it'll get our tattoo count back to full quota following Josh Charnley's exit to Leigh

And so you aim towards the sky,
And you'll rise high today,
Fly away, Far away,
Far from pain....

Re: New Coach : Mon Aug 07, 2023 4:50 pm
To all those people who are totally writing off this appointment, just ask yourself how much coaching experience Ellery Hanley had when he won Saints a GF?

Similar to Hanley, Burgess is a genuine great of the game, so I'm going to be interested to see if he can work the same magic that Hanley did - Sometimes, just the sheer aura of an individual can overcome perceived negatives that someone might have... Look at Kenny Dalglish for Liverpool in the 80's, zero experience, wins a double first season - Sometimes great players transfer immediately to being great coaches.

Re: New Coach : Mon Aug 07, 2023 5:00 pm
I really did want it to work out for Daryl Powell but it just wasn’t to be. Clearly, he had a difficult task but his man management to improve the culture brief was way off. I didn’t see any visible identity of his either in our style of play despite the classy Cas image. His recruitment too was very poor - Holmes, Matautia, McGuire, Drinkwater, Minikin and Dufty have all disappointed. Left Kasiano out because I think he could add something if we have a strong pack.
So while accepting Burgess has to be a major gamble, I am warming to the idea. We have tried experience and it failed and, as the game has changed, Powell, McDermott and Noble et al might have had their day. Burgess has a big personality and I can’t see many players (including Toby King) willing to take him on. We need new ideas and he has the background for that.
Of the alternatives, we have second in command Aussie coaches similar to Steve Price or Paul Rowley who has just overseen 7 losses in a row.
Sean Long should know enough about Super League and Paul Cullen as Director of Rugby as back up has the makings of a decent set up.
Then again I could be wrong……
