In my opinion Price's comment about a player being a 'mongrel' was made in all innocence. What he said was lost in translation and isn't offensive in Australia. If he'd have known how the word is perceived in this country he wouldn't have said it. McGuire doesn't have that defence. DM me if you want details.

nah, that didn't wash with me then and it doesn't now, if he called him a mongrel, thats one thing, thats a specific type of tenacity, character wiry.

You could tell before the sending off that McGuire was providing some real leadership to our forwards. My concern is that although we gave some decent props, we don’t have another obvious leader in the forwards. He is the only forward in the leadership group which says a lot. If he cops a significant ban I think it will really challenge us as a playing group. Who’s going to step up? I can’t really see a candidate.

I honestly think Price has inadvertantly shortened the word mongrel to mong. He's used the word 'mong' as part of a compliment to Ellis Longstaff in describing him as our best player in a performance. If he used the word mong in a negative context, then absolutely he should have been castigated.

People can make innocent verbal mistakes quite easily and where it is evident within the context of a sentence/paragraph that it's obvious that no offence was intended, then I believe people should be given the benefit of the doubt.

This doesn't sound good at all.......only "saving grace" is that it's at the start of the season and not the end I suppose.

Whatever ban he gets, he will deserve, and hopefully learn from.

Race, religion, sexuality it would be direct abuse/discrimination and he’d have the book thrown at him. What I believe he said is wrong but not targeted abuse - very clumsy though. Talk of 8 game bans are silly IMO. McGuire qualifies for PDRL and has been down to help out so a stupid comment in the heat of the moment should be taken as such.

Being at the start of the season might even work against him. It depends what the panel is in 'early season crackdown' mode about this year.
