| Got Sky HD before Christmas at half price for 12 months as my brother in law is a Sky fitter,I would now not go back to normal def,was watching game last night and the picture quality was outstanding even Stevo's new teeth shone out. Normal TV looks blurred in comparison. Wonder how long before they have super league in 3D ?

| Sport in HD is excellent, and so are the movie channels. But watching films on a Blu Ray player (not a PS3) are something else.

| Why not a PS3? Picture quality is same as dedicated players and better than cheap ones. TV plays a huge part too, only.as good as what ur watching it on.

Quote Rob Wire="Rob Wire"If you like your sport then Sky HD is worth every penny, if you do get it installed then ask for either a Pace or Samsung box, don`t get a Thompson as they are prone to numerous failures.
As an example of how good Sky HD is, the engineer did a test while he was here doing the installation, he put flicked to sky sports HD 1 which was showing some football and the picture was amazing, he then put the sky sports 1 normal SD feed on and it was really blurry and grainy and the picture was soft, your eyes go funny as if your eyesight is out of focus.
HD all the way if you like your RL and sport, only get it if you have a minimum of the sports pack as it wouldn`t be worth it just for the free BBC HD channel, you can get ITV HD as well if you have the new EPG (Electronic programme guide), ITV HD isn`t on the sky platform but their is an option to add channels on the new EPG, you just input the frequency and you can watch things like the champions league football in HD.
Personally i would only get HD though if you have a full HD TV, you can get HD ready TV`s but they downscale the picture to fit the size of the screen resolution, it would still be a great picture but technically its won`t be full HD. A full HD TV is 1920 x 1200 which in TV terms is full HD at present, HD ready TV`s have a lesser resolution which means they can`t display as much information and picture detail.
This is how you add ITV HD to your sky for those that don`t already know how to do it.

Because PS3's don't play Blu Ray in full 1080HD, therefore not the same quality as a dedicated player, especially if you have 24p technology on both player and TV..... poor mans high definition if you like.

Yes they do 1080p and 24pfs. Since firmware update can encode HD audio onboard and output via PCM.

| It is better but after a while ie months your eyes will adjust and although it is better it doesn't seem so. You will also find on a lot of occasions you tend to flick through when there is bugger all on and stick on a said channel when you find something you like eg;sky 1 but forgetting it's also on another channel in hd further through the guide so it's pros and cons. Who ever mentioned don't accept a thomson box, it's not that easy unless you pay full whack instaed of just for installation as sky get the boxes from various manufactors its pot luck what ones they have at the time but no of them are much superior to the next it's whether it's a new box or an 'a' grade ie (re-furb) hope this helps

Incorrect my friend.
And yes, Sports in HD is immense, just watching Murray/Federer on BBCHD, absolutely fantastic. You don't know how good it is till you see it

| I'd always thought my Sky picture was great until I upgraded to Sky HD just before Christmas. The different is very clear. The HD picture is amazingly sharp, especially for sport.

At first I thought the same, but, for most people the T/V is one of the main sources of entertainment and we ourselves spend most of our work evenings watching the box.
A friend of mine and his partner both smoke 20 a day costing them a tenner each and every day that equates to over £3,500 per year.
A lad at work says he would think nothing of spending £90 on a pair of jeans.
My best friend has just spent £15,000 on a Caterham car that he will polish each week and take out on about 10 Sundays per year.
I think other than life's absolute necessities such as food, warmth and shelter everything else is superfluous.

| What about recording, though? When the Wire are on I always record the game on my hard disk DVD recorder, then , if it's a good match, burn it to DVD to keep, and erase the hard disk copy to free up space. As I understand it I can record HD to a Sky Plus HD box, but can I then transfer an HD recording to a (non HD) DVD recorder, or direct to a DVD? If not, does this mean that Wire games I'd have to watch and record on normal Sky, thus meaning only non-Wire games would I get the HD benefit? Or I'd have to keep it on the Sky Plus box forever?

Sky won't let Virgin have it, I have a 42'' 1080 and even though some transmissions are really good in HD the difference is in imo not worth paying an extra £10 for.

You can record a Warrington game thats being broadcast in HD direct to your dvd recorder but it will be downscaled to standard definition (it will be slighlty better than a normal SD picture), their arn`t any dvd recorders at the moment that support recording HD direct from one HD platform like a Sky HD box to a dvd recorder, i can`t see it happening in the near future either. It will probably only happen when HD is standard in every household and that will take some time and even then their is no guarentee, the closest at the moment are the Panasonic DMR BS750 and BS850 bluray recorders but they don`t have HDMI in, i think this maybe something to do with sky where they have encrypted the feed to stop people distributing their HD content and to try and get more people to buy HD.
Its no problem recording the HD game to your sky HD box which will obviously play back in HD, what i do is record the odd game of ours to the HD box and at the same time have it recording to the dvd recorder just incase its a good game that i want to put on disc.
You wouldn`t fit a full HD recording onto a stndard 4.7GB dvd disc anyway, it would have to go onto a bluray disc which as you already probably know they are expensive to buy at the min.

Sky broadcasts in either 720p or 1080i, depending on your preference (720p is less lines but it "scrolls" through them, so always 720 lines showing. 1080i is more lines, but it alternates them, and so only 540 on at any one time - in the milisecond world - but gives the appearance of 1080 lines. No real difference when viewing, they are just processed differently). "Full HD" is 1080p, which is the best of both worlds, but Sky doesn't broadcast in 1080p, and so it will make no difference to your rugby viewing whether you get a "Full HD" TV or not, although it is not worth having HD if your TV is 28" or less, and even at 32" the increase is marginal.
HD is definitely worth it, especially if you have the movie channel and your TV is 40" or above. It's a bit of a shock at half-time though, when you have Stevo in full HD!

| I'm not getting HD until I get a decent TV.
I'm waiting till I can afford a full monty Sony Bravia I saw one in Marks and Spencers at Westbrook and found myself stood there standing at the picture trying to work out if it was real...!!! the quality was like nothing ive ever seen.....
Ive seen these £400 quid Lcd Hd ready tv's and the picture is shocking and I can only imagine its what having cataracts is like...
I'm happy with my Sky plus and my old fashioned widescreen Telly with crystal clear (but not HD) picture.
Ive got surround sound so I can get the full effect of the Halliwell jones Boo boys.....
