Henare was a real flare player but didn't own a watch and would go walkabout. What a guy though. There are very few real characteur players and we've had quite a few with Henare and Dessie, both made from the same mould.

Only comparison with Dessie is that he was exciting going forward, got the crowd on their feet. Dessie had a lot more going for him and his record for Leigh the Wire and GB shows that. Don't think Henare is in the same league IMO.

Unfortunately Henare let himself go and his career at the top flight was so short.

The closest thing we have is Kevin Penny, unfortunately he's not in the side.

Back to Henare, loved that story about him running rings around the British Lions team on a beach in New Zealand. And they had no idea who he was.

when he went missing from warrington he moved to arply street in town my m8 had a flat on the same street and i knew richie anyway we used to go for mini games of rugby and when hes stood in front of you he could easly send you one way and shoot off the other from stood still he had amazing pace. i knew him very well. i remember being in his house one time and it was when nigel vagana just signed for us and he was there it was crazy :D

Good lord, the passing of time really has rose-tinted a few peoples' memories. He wasn't that good, or even close.
