If the richer clubs can afford to pay for more marquee players then their other squad players can filter down the league (since there aren’t numerous other leagues to play in) in sales to lower sides so the overall quality of the league improves.

You would hope that this would be the case but's only partially true PC and wishful thinking unfortunately as marquee money doesn't necessarily mean marquee quality?

No it doesn't but it allows to be competitive to nrl players given the disparity in wages, particularly when your on about half's fullbacks. It's not a guarante that they will be the quality we would want from a marquee. I think also what we expect from a marquee is pretty high standards, people may cite his wages as reason for expectation, but Roberts was hardly tearing the nrl up and we probably paid a little more or the standard wage that an nrl club would have done, good bonuses, man of match bonus do not count on cap nor do any bonus associated with winning gf or cc. That's what make our contract seem appealing.

I disagree that it's unfair on other sides that cannot compete financially, thees no incentive to if we're in a capped sport that sets the lowest affordability as the standard for all. It's not looking good for us when it comes to getting lore money from sky we've slipped down their pecking order but more TV money better brands sponsoring super league clubs stadiums and competitions, are all achievable. Investors dont always want to turn a profit also. Clubs should be out there seeking investment and sponsorship 24/7 improve quality of rugby n crowds will increase. If this marquee rule means we can spend closer to what we're able to them so be it.

For clarity I agree with the marquee rule and dont think it's unfair to operate one as a race to the bottom serves no one and despite the efforts (wrongly iMO) of creating a level playing field there never will be one and it seems that some aren't spending to the 'basic' cap as it stands. I also agree that investment should be encouraged and the sport would benefit if the clubs could afford ambition....in short it was a dig at Roberts not necessarily Psychedelic Casual

If they do introduce a 3rd marquee I think it should only be for use on a home grown player, who has come through the academy.

It would reward clubs who develop their own players, and also help clubs to have more chance of retaining their youngsters.

Of course the NRL could still come calling, and you can't hold a player back if they really want to give it a crack.

Clubs may be forced in to that anyway - £450k cap space on three players seems a little steep?

Using it on a player such as Ben Currie would seem more sensible. I’d agree in maybe making it a mandatory homegrown marquee spot though.

There is already an incentive on home grown marquees.
Around a 1/3 off. Pies exercised that on Tomkins and Williams.

Bit of a thought experiment here but how do you think people would feel about RL if it actually did suddenly become a global success like the Premier League?

What if Super League became the glamour league to play in throughout the whole of world rugby, Qatari / Russian billionaires started buying up SL clubs, the salary cap was scrapped, new franchises set up in Edinburgh, Birmingham and clubs like Wakey and Cas died away, ticket prices went up to £40-50 per game and so many of the traditional fans relied on watching the games on TV while a new audience of middle/upper income fans started packing the HJ to watch a Warrington side including Valentine Holmes, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and a big name cross-code signing from the All Blacks...

Would this be a dream scenario or would we be longing for the days you could get in Wilderspool for a tenner and mickey up a wall at half time in the toilets off the Fletcher Street end...?

I'm ready from all the union clubs to smell the custard...and start knocking.
If there hadn't been the split the game of rugby may have developed to become a soccer equal.

In essence Rugby was bigger than soccer in the turn of the century for some clubs.

Good point.

Let’s hope that the recruiters do their homework, recruit well and bring that good quality in or that clubs keep the good homegrown quality from leaving by making them the marquees.
