Widdop looked like he was trying. That is as far as I will compliment. Far too often we insist on passing the ball to a prop, to pass behind another prop, to a halfback, to pass behind another forward to a halfback/Ratchford, at which point the ‘move’ is finished. It’s been done to death. Wane’s Wigan mastered it, and it worked because the dummy runners were like caged animals, so you had to mark them just incase. We have someone plodding showing no enthusiasm or intent to get the ball.
I watched the retro games last week, the two games vs Leeds in 05 and 06, where we zipped the ball from one side to the other in 2 or 3 long, fast passes and really challenged the edge defence, no messing around, no slow props floating rainbow passes. Just direct, Dummy half to Briers, on to Gleeson RUN. It’s so simple, but it gave the centres a 2 vs 2 chance.
