Gonna be honest, I've not been on the longstaff hype train so far, he's done alright, we've not used him much other than to accommodate moving Hughes to the middle. And even for an academy player thought he was a bit small for a BR.

Pricey obviously trusts him though.

Yesterday though, Holy poop, when he got moved to prop, fair play to the lad, he was sticking it to the Salford defenders when hitting it up.

It's interesting, I've watched him really closely since he broke into the team. He does absolutely everything right including all the small stuff. He just seems to naturally know what to do and where to be. In my experience very few players have this at that age. Bateman did when he originally broke through at Wigan. Longstaff could be world class if he works hard but you're right, he does need to muscle up in the off season.

Yes, Longstaff did look good, even though he was coming off the bench. It will be interesting to see how much muscle weight he puts on in the off season. He certainly has a bit of 'attitude' and works his socks off.
I liked the bullet pass that Thewlis made when he looked to be trapped in his own goal area in the first half. For me that sort of play defines him, he is so turned on with a great rugby brain. I see his brother Jake who is in this years U16's played for the U19's yesterday and scored another try as we beat Saints away 24-22.( I assume Saddened will be on here shortly to tell us that they only fielded 11 players and they were all U11's.) We might have another quality player coming through !

That result can`t be correct surely?

Saddened told us that our youth recruitment is crap and we only sign duds, whereas Sintellins sign the creme de la creme.

He's only 19 isn't he? He will naturally bulk up over the next few years.

In the Salford match last year the only ones who stood out to me as players who would make it were longstaff, Dean and Thewlis. Wrench didn't have the best game but has since shown some promise. You're right about what sets them apart it is the little things, the attention to detail like wrapping the ball in a 1 on 1 tackle, Dean taking on the line well, thewlis collecting every high ball and returning well. The team that day had no right to compete with and almost beat Salford, lots of the players we had out were not the most talented BUT their attitude and effort to a man was absolutely outstanding.

I thought he did OK, he seems to be using his feet a lot more to offset the disadvantage of his size. He has a trademark offload which he treated us to against Salford. Surrounded by 2-3 tacklers holding him, his arm appeared above the forest of heads and he gave a perfect pass out to a support player. It's a pity he has played so few games this year ( total of 5) and has not been out on loan since he was recalled from Widnes.

According to wiki he weighs in at 15st 9lbs, which isnt bad for a 20 year old.

I don't know what he weighs tbh, but if you look at him close up he is solid muscle. Strength is probably his greatest asset which he uses to good effect in the offloads. But he can't crash into the line like Mulhern and make the same yardage. Still he is very young for a prop, I was always told that they only reach their peak at 26/27 so plenty of time to kick on.

It was a very strange match but no surprise given the line up. Highlights for me, Ben Currie, Matt Davis (in the old days a player would be called “nuggety” that sums him up). Matt Ashton, I’m not sure what he sees when he looks in the mirror (A Walmesley?)but he runs it in like he expects to bust the tackle. Austin knuckling down to the job. The 3 youngsters highlighted by most people on here.

Oh, and Jake Mamo even though he didn’t play. I will miss him.
