New Training Facility : Sun Mar 31, 2024 10:00 am
The Club have applied for planning permission to move the training facility to Victoria Park.

It`s probably the cheapest option available and we had to move from Padgate, but flooding from the River Mersey is a major concern.

The new flood defences around that area are designed to use the park as an overflow when necessary.

I can see a situation similar to what happened to Leeds - and they've never been the same since!

Hmm, I’ll reserve judgement till I’ve seen it but modular offices and an under croft doesn’t exactly scream ‘we want to be the best club in SL’.

I’m hoping this is the beginning of turning Vicky Park in to a leading facility, not just for Warrington, but something all community clubs in the town can utilise. Ideally extending the current stand to full length and adding offices / meeting rooms / treatment rooms / media rooms / gym etc etc

Wigan (unsurprisingly) seem light years ahead.

Those buildings are more than capable of holding a very nice office. You could easily have a world class gym/recovery facility in the existing buildings too. It kind of feels like a temporary solution. There's so much unused space there that I'm sure the Council will allow you to go to town on it, provided they get something back. The fact you're aren't doing anything bar putting the gym equipment in and making minor alterations to the exterior suggests there might be bigger plans elsewhere? I guess the flooding side of it might be the reason, but I can't say I've ever seen the park flooding any worse than the fields being underwater, which they are now. The 4G pitch and academy pitch are fine however?

Vicky Park is an absolute godsend to the junior clubs in winter. It would be fantastic if Wire could really develop it and allow the community clubs access as well.

Re the flooding, isn't it normally just the pitch near the weir that gets waterlogged?

I cant recall it flooding along the back nearer kingsway bridge

I remember Cardinal Hulme (St. John`s) School grounds being flooded, with the school being totally surrounded by water, (Which is adjacent to the Kingsway Bridge.)

Yes, it is the area around the bowling green that is the lowest lying area and gets flooded first.

You only have to look at the heights of the ramp that you drive over at the park entrance and the embankment parallel to Knutsford Road, to see the level of river water that the flood defence is designed to contain within the park to prevent the roads and properties outside the park from flooding.

Doubt if the club would get any insurance company to insure the proposed training facility from flood damage.

The Environment Agency won`t be interested in any issues with a Rugby League training ground flooding & It just seems folly to build there,

Here is an example of a flood in 2013:-

There’s two things here really. First pitch to flood is generally the ‘Skate Park Pitch’, it’s often out of use for months - this is the pitch immediately in front of the 3G pitch, known by Latchford Giants as ‘Lake Victoria!’. The ‘changing rooms pitch’ between the god awful changing rooms and the restaurant that used to be the maternity hospital generally fares better but still suffers from standing water. This is aways due to heavy rain, games were called off last week due to standing water. However, the whole park has been designed to hold a massive amount of water for when the Mersey breaks its banks. As Boss Hogg mentions the slope you drive up as you go in is there to stop flood water getting to the houses the other side of Knutsford Road, it’s also why the £4m stand they built (the bottom floor of which the club want to put the gym) is on stilts, the park is designed to hold several feet of flood water.

that side where cardinal newman is particularly low land, certainly round near mersey walk on the bend.

admittedly i've not been on the path at the back of vicky park for ages but in my mind the bank on that side was a lot higher and not susceptible to the high tide.

i always think its the training pitch that gets it historically, but you're right, i was suprised last week when they said the other pitches were water logged
