New song for the North Stand. ‘One nil to the Leyther Boys’ to the tune of ‘Go West’ by The Pet Shop Boys. As in the old song from the Highbury terraces, 1-0 to the Arsenal.
Incredible performance. To go toe to toe with Wigan for 82 minutes like that, having lost three key forwards from last season is mightily impressive.
The attack understandably needs to sharpen up. Hopefully we'll see more of Armstong running inside Lam, like he did for the carry before the drop goal. All the debutants had excellent games, as did Halton. According to SL stats, he made 40 tackles and 140 metres.
Some excuses on the Wigoon board, but that's expected when they lose.
Not sure I agree with your assessment there Cokey, yes there are post of where we went wrong and things we should have done better but I don't think they are excuses as to the loss, more that we should have done better.
Credit to Leigh as I thought in the first half we had the best of field position but couldn't make anything of it, down to good Leigh defence and some poor decision making on our part.
Second half was far more even and I thought you defended really well and did to us what we normally do to other teams, defend a game out and pip them at the end.
If field passes it was a certain try, if Farrell doesn't kick the ball into the stand it may have been reviewed and a penalty given to us on your own line, if Smith actually tries a drop goal when he is in front of the sticks like he was on at least two occasions at the end, rather than the pathetic attempt from 40m out, there were further points in the game where we should have done much better but failed to execute, not excuses just an assessment of where we went wrong and need to be much better.
But credit to Leigh, they matched us and took the spoils home in what has to be the most bizarre game and score line I have ever been to, well done and on the night and the first community trophy sits in your cabinet.

Prior to Lammy having to leap like a salmon to stop a Bevan French certain try, Wigan opted to attack on the left edge, surely a drop goal with 1 or 2 tackles left would have won the game. Sensing that there might be an arrogance in the Wigan team that they can score a try at will, when game management required only a point to win the game.

Don't think it was arrogance, just a brain fade, maybe a lack of composure. Thought Leigh made a bit of a mess of that very last set as well, should really have got to the last play and drop goal attempt then as well.

I accept your credits, thanks; but there are if's in your post which to me suggest excuses bud. We have if's as well, but my assessment of the game was, that it was a great spectacle for the sport, with the best officiating I've seen in a long while to let the game flow, which i found very entertaining with great defence, especially for the 1st match of the season. FWIW - I'm not a fan of GP.

There are always if's and but's in most games win or loose, not always excuses as such just observations, shoulda coulda woulda as they say.
Not sure of a great spectacle but a great battle between two good teams, I like to see a bit more flare and bum off the seat moments when watching games.

I know what you mean , for me it was bum of seat all night , but if i watched the replay you wouldn't see much open rugby .
