Comparing squad strength to 2017 : Tue Jan 31, 2023 2:44 pm
I can’t help thinking the squad assembled so far is nowhere near that of the 2017 version that only won 5 games and finished 2nd bottom, Her it is in it’s full glory:-
Backs:- Greg McNally, Ryan Hampshire, Samisoni Langi, Adam Higson, Lewis Foster, Dan Fleming, Ben Crooks, Mitch Brown, James Clare, Matty Dawson, Martyn Ridyard, Daniel Mortimer, Josh Drinkwater, Ben Reynolds.
Forwards:- Jamie Acton, Gareth Hock, James Green, Sam Hopkins, Liam Hood, Micky Higham, Antoni Maria, Eloi Pelissier, Dane Weston, Danny Tickle, Cory Patterson, Lachlan Burr, Harrison Hansen, Atelea Vea, Dave Thompson, Glen Stewart

Looking at the strength in depth of the forwards it is very impressive indeed. We have the aggressiveness of Props Hock, Acton and Weston, 3 brilliant but different hookers in Higham, Hood and Pollissier, 3 impressive 2nd towers in Stewart, Patterson and Hansen with workhorse Burr at loose forward. A good 30 man squad that could only win 5 matches, but suffered too many injuries. Going off this our 26 man squad needs topping up a.s.a.p.!!

Re: Comparing squad strength to 2017 : Tue Jan 31, 2023 4:13 pm
Firstly, Dave Thompson was a winger. You can be forgiven for that as he played one game and had a shocker which capped off an almost entirely anonymous stay at Leigh. Secondly, we have 27 currently in the squad, not 26. Thirdly, players like Mortimer, Langi and others arrived very late in the season only after Weston, Willie Tonga and others had either retired or moved on. We never had more than 28/29 players at the club at any point that season, 2 of which (Foster/Thompson) were lower end championship level at best and played 1 game between them.

The 2017 squad was alright, even good at times but it had a shocking discipline problem(here's looking at Acton, Higson, Hock for starters) and had a shocking defensive record (6 times we lost a game whilst scoring 22 or more points). I'd also contest your point about having 3 "brilliant but different hookers in Higham, Hood and Pellissier". All 3 of those hookers were pretty much the same type of player at varying stages of career - running hookers who were decent darting out from behind a quick ruck, but had poor distribution. Micky was very much struggling with the pace of the game by mid season. Jukes was also very much out of his depth and badly managed the squad.

Any 17 from the players you've listed for 2017, based on their performances/attitudes in that particular year, would get beat pretty comfortably by the 2023 17. We were so slow in defense around the ruck in 2017... Ipape, Asiata and Kai O'Donnell would have an absolute field day.

Did you actually watch any games in 2017? Forwards were so good that a grand total of 1 got a super league contract after our relegation (Maria signed for Catalans.) Compare that to this year and the likes of Asiata, O'Donnell, Amone and Ipape wouldn't look out of place in any of the top 6 sides.

Granted we look like we could possibly lack some depth this year but it's still miles better than the 2017 squad.

Also helped by the fact we've two experienced people in charge in Lam and Chester, not the chuckle brothers like in 2017.

Too many of the 2017 squad were gnarly veterans:
Dane Weston, Danny Tickle, Cory Patterson, Micky Higham, Harrison Hansen, Atelea Vea, Glen Stewart, Martyn Ridyard, Jamie Acton, Gareth Hock.

There are plenty of good players but all in their 30's at the time.

As pointed out already Jukesy was way out of his depth.

We faced multiple problems in 2017, one of which was the coner stone of our pack in Hock Higham Tickle and Hansen tired as the season went on, we had a decent start to the season and was very unlucky against Leeds. The home win against Salford late on made me think we could of just managed stop up with McNally having a blinder but if memory serves when it came to the last few games he reverted back to Hampshire , which leads me to the other problem , our coach , although did a great job in getting us up didn’t always know the best team .
Also noting how Widnes managed to beat us 3 times that year beggars belief

Sorry CH but I'm with everybody else on this thread.

Having just seen what LC has posted I concur as well. The defining depths of that season for me were those defeats to a rank average Widnes team who finished bottom in the League but who were still good enough in the play-offs to avoid the million pound game, unlike us.

Perhaps a little contentious for most fellow Leigh fans, but for me the only player from the 2017 team that I would still have is Drinkwater. He always was and still is a Super League quality half back. I am still at a loss as to how Leigh fans never seemed to see this.

Regarding Drinkwater , I think the reason some fans didn’t take to him was loyalty they felt for Riddy. Was a top player then and still is now
You see it now with the lovers of Reynolds , some think he or thought he is a better option than Lam.
I’m not fussed if he’s from Wigan Road or Bondi if he’s the best option then he must play.
Note - would love Leigh lads in Leigh Shirts but the pool isn’t there for this yet

can you remind us which h/b pairing got us in sl in the 2016 season - can you remind us which h/b we let go to help save huddersfield from serious relegation - can you remind us which h/b was then let go to give fev a good season and wallop us whilst we spent daft money on players who couldn't even get us in the p/offs - can you remind us which h/b was brought back and give us a good season in 2019 - i suppose some folk forget i guess

Not quite sure what your point is, I’ve never said Martyn was a bad player or didn’t warrant a place in the team in any of the seasons you pointed out.
I was suggesting some people didn’t take to Drinkwater for their affinity with Riddy
