HELP NEEDED...... On details of an ex leigh player : Thu Jun 11, 2009 5:56 pm  

A mate at work is going thru his family tree and found his great,great,great Grandad use to play for Leigh, but he is stuck on any information about his carreer with leigh other than
His name is Dai Davies, and he made 259 for leigh from 1913 onwards.

My mate is aware he started his career with swintion RLFC before going to play for Bolton wanderers FC before returing to rugby league and joining Leigh.

Does anybody on here know anything of this gent, ie tries/points/playing position or basically anything at all..... also if anyone has any pictures they would be greatly appreciated

I know a man who could possibly help you. He has photographs (which are currently in my possession) of most of the old players and teams. I'll have a look if I can see a mention of his name on one of the team photos I have.

There were 2 Dai Davies's (please see below)

Dai Davies was signed from Caerphilly RU.
Position was threequarter, than later played forward.
His debut was v Widnes (away) on Jan 23 1909, Widnes won 3-0 in front of a crowd of 1000.

1908/09 - 8 appearances, 2 Tries
1909/10 - 28 appearances, 3 Tries
1910/11 - 25 appearances, 3 Tries
1911/12 - 26 appearances, 4 Tries
1912/13 - 23 appearances, 1 Try
1913/14 - 32 appearances, 3 Tries
1914/15 - 9 appearances, 1 Try
1918/19 - 13 appearances, 2 Tries
1919/20 - 27 appearances, 1 Try
1920/21 - 28 appearances, 0 Tries
1921/22 - 35 appearances, 3 Tries
1922/23 - 5 appearances, 0 Tries

Dai Davies signed from Swinton in 1913, debut was v Wigan (home) Leigh lost 25-14 in front of a crowd of 9000. Position was half back.

1913/14 - 5 appearances, 0 Tries (his only season at Leigh)

On the same line any info on Ellis Clarkson he is on the photo when Leigh won the cup (before challenge) in the 30's i think it was on the pub wall opposite the Waterside.He was my late nans cousin,also his brother played for Leigh.The photo was taken outside a Leigh school,and also my dads best mate when he played for Leigh Wally Tallis the father of Gorden the bull Tallis.All the best get looking Bobby Dave.

Whilst we are looking at old players, Joe Cartwright in the 1920's does anybody know much about him??

There's an E Clarkson (capt) on this photo - it's a bit earlier than you suggest but could it be him?
