Maybe no rise, but he should be entitled to at least time and a half, for night shift work, surely?

A pit town voting for the Tories after Thatcher destroyed their industry. And you believe they will look after a working class town like Leigh. Lol.

And there is also this information.......

160 mines were closed under Thatcher’s time in office (1979–1990) Approx 11 years

290 were closed under Harold Wilson’s premierships alone (1965–1969 1974–1975) Approx 10 years

The more important detail is the number of deep pits closed, disregarding small mines, sometimes privately owned

Labour in total closed 371 deep pits.

Clement Atlee closed 101 in the early days after nationalisation

Harold Wilson closed 235 between 1964 and 1970 and 18 in the years after the miners strike during Heath’s term in office

James Callaghan continued the policy of supporting the NUM by closing just 4 mines in 1977- 1979

Blair closed 10 in 10 years and Brown 1.

Thatcher closed 115 deep pits.

MacMillan closed the most: 246 during the times that “we never had it so good” 1957- 1963 Previously Churchill had closed 78 and Eden 35. There was little protest at mine closures during this time or throughout Wilson’s time in office.

Heath closed 24 pits but disputes over pay and 2 miner’s strikes resulted in him losing power when he called a general election hoping to gain popular support in refusing to agree to the miner’s claims. This gave the NUM the impression that they held a great deal of political influence.

Although the number on mines closed by Thatcher was just marginally more than Atlee it was a much greater percentage of mines remaining. Cheap imports oil and nuclear power had made British coal less profitable and the militant miner’s union had put politics before production. The decline continued under Major with 55 pits closed and the last deep pit in Britain shut down in December 2015 due to lack of orders. By 2025 it is planned there will be no coal fired power stations left in the UK.

Jo Platt was s member of the Shadow cabinet, so obviously a Corbynite and a self confessed remoaner. So she got her just deserts managing to lose a 13,000 majority built up by Andy Burnham. The writing was on the wall the Saturday before the election after a daily mail poll showed the Tories at 40% to Labour 39 %. On Bradshawgate you couldn’t move for Labour canvassers for the first time ever!!

Jo Platt went against the party whip to vote Johnson's deal through to second reading. She voted against May's deal, which was widely condemned, particularly by ardent, frothing at the mouth leavers that like to use the term "remoaner" (figures such as Boris Johnson).

The one thing she has voted to block is No Deal brexit. In about 5 months time, Grundy will be faced with a similar dilemma.

I voted at the time to remain but accepted the result, unlike all the remoaners led by all the luvvies in London out of touch with the silent majority,

There was no such thing as a deal on the ballot paper anyway.

Re: Leigh turns blue : Mon Dec 16, 2019 6:52 pm
Jo Platt, like Nandy voted for a second reading as they saw the writing on the wall for an election and thought "oh, I'm an MP for a leave majority constituency, perhaps I should look like I'm doing something to respect democracy."

Too little, too late. With Nandy still parroting on about a customs union, she clearly hasn't understood what leaving the EU is.

Though, to be pedantic, the referendum did say not to be a "member" - i.e. we can not be a member but still be part of all their institutions, if some were to follow that referendum to the letter.

To the point about "No Deal." This is the legal default, as decreed by the action of activating Article 50 and therefore if nothing is signed by the 31st January 2020, we leave with no deal, unless the government amend the act to delay again but then they'd be doing it as themselves as there isn't the cat and mouse no majority that May and the first months of Boris as PM had to deal with.

And one other point. Even if the WA/PD is signed and we enter into the transition phase which is due to end in December of 2020, the UK government can legitimately just tear up any agreement and still leave without "a deal."

Yes not exactly gentlemanly conduct but the threat of "no deal" never goes away.

Logically the UK government with its huge majority should have the whip hand in negotiations with the EU now but we shall just all see how it plays out.

Like we've had to suffer through for the last 3 1/2 years.

A prime minister from Wigan would liven up the local derby.
