Leroy wants to be fullback : Mon Jul 27, 2009 7:48 am
LEROY CUDJOE still believes his future lies at full-back – despite producing another dazzling wing performance.

The 21-year-old former Newsome Panthers junior grabbed the second Super League hat trick of his career in yesterday’s convincing 36-12 triumph over Catalans Dragons at the Galpharm Stadium.

Cudjoe last season scored three tries in a 19-18 home defeat to Warrington Wolves when he was playing at full-back.

But even though he has produced some outstanding displays on the right wing over the past six games and scored a highly impressive nine tries, he still has his sights set on taking Brett Hodgson’s No1 shirt further down the line.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying this spell on the wing,” said Cudjoe.

“I’ve been scoring a lot of tries – which is what the coaching staff want from me – and my confidence is sky high.

“But I don’t think I’d ever class myself as a winger ahead of being a full-back.

chatting to him at a School rugby comp a few weeks ago and he's set his heart on that No1 jersey, Hodgsons only going to be here until 2010 and i see no reason why he can't nail it, especially if he continues to matures over the next twelve months as he has the last ......

I think he's capable of it, and must be learning alot about the position from Brett, a great role model for him.

it would be great for his confidence if he was actually able to pinch the shirt from hodgy whilst he is still with us, and relegate hodgy to the bench

only problem then, for me anyway is thats a waste of a bench place. what good is hodgy and / or cudjoe on the bench.

i just believe we should have a strong bench of forwards to take over from the starting forwards that will tire during the game. thats just my opinion but brett hodgson on the bench would be a waste of time in my opinion, cudjoe and hodgy should start.

a good start for leroy would be this friday, give hodgson a rest for the semi and let cudjoe play the game at fullback! see how he has developed then take it from there!

i meant that if leroy could dislodge hodgy from the team he must be good at his job..its a long time since we have had competition for places like this

No way should Leroy play FB if Brett's fit.

It might seem obvious but the thing that's out of Leroy's reach is the experience that Brett has, especially in big games. That's why Brett should play every possible minute for us at full back between now any when he hang's up his boots. It's not just about being full back - it's about being captain and leader (inspirational in Brett's case) aswell. Even on the wing Leroy will learn so much about playing full back and the game in general just being alongside Brett.
