Just making the 8 - and with a game to spare is a massive achievement for us, remember most of our own fans had us down for another bottom/MPG finish only a matter of weeks ago, anything above 8 is now a bonus to me, the fact we still have a chance of the top 4 is amazing and would be huge if we made it, but i'm more than happy with 8th and enjoying the next 7/8 games without pressure.

Looking forward to Friday to see if qualifying has released some pressure off the players and they play without fear and enjoy themselves.

How sad that some people are happy to be ambitionless. Settle just to make the top 8.
Before a ball had even been thrown there were many on here saying how much better the squad was and were contenders. Funny isn't it how people's thinking changes. we had a truly awful start due partly to injuries and partly because Stone as coach couldn't get the players to buy in.
whilst ever we are happy to be middle plodders that's where we will stay.

Re: v HULL : Tue Jul 18, 2017 4:24 pm
some are just being realistic

start of the season after finishing 14th from 14 last year a top 8 finish was the aim, even the players said that too... and if they were in contention to make the top 4 they will go for it...unfortunately they arent really in contention for the top 4..unless something amazing happens.

the few are getting their hopes up for a top 4 spot... then will be slagging the team off in a few weeks and this board will be going into meltdown once again

I certainly take your point jools, I was one who said at start of season that survival was the main aim after the nightmare of last season, We have achieved that now ,but to start talking about saving ourselves and building for next season and settling for survival is exactly the reason we never win anything, If we are going to throw the towel in after 23 rounds , whats the point, we may as well just buy a ticket for 23 rounds because we look unlikely to win anything.

Personally i don't mind getting beaten if they play well and are beaten by a better side, but we can still have a say in how things end ,and to be fair we owe it to the game to try to win every match otherwise the whole thing just becomes a joke. I'm afraid there are to many Giants fans who will settle for anything, They are just so relieved at having survived they will settle for anything. Talk about knowing your place.

I haven't 'settled' for 8th, i am certainly aware we can finish higher and even make the semi finals if we step up a gear BUT i'm also not gonna expect or hope we do, it's a massive task and one that will be a massive bonus if we do it, personally i don't think we can as we have too much to make up, we're expecting teams above us to go to pot while we step up another couple of levels.

The point i was making was we have survived in super league and surely after the 1st half of the season that in itself is a huge achievement already, maybe it's more a case of some people have unrealistic hopes.

Be happy for what has been achieved and hope we can build on this next year rather than putting more pressure on them already.

A Giants and Saints win this weekend and the 4th spot is wide open! With everyone left to play each other once, it would mean a win over a top 4 team and 1 more win in the remaining fixtures. A loss Friday and it makes it a whole lot harder.

I wouldn't be happy this year if we finished 8th, not considering expectations at the start of last season, but I'm pleased not to be in the middle 8s and if we can get top 6 it's got to be classed as a successful season.

Bodes well for the next few years, we have a good young nucleus with some decent exposure to super league. We have a proper squad now.

Evidence and attributable quotes please.

Most people could see what was going on at the club and thankfully didn't listen to comments such as 'Weakman', 'Mamo won't be all that' etc...

I said at the time when we couldn't buy a win that we weren't far off and it proved to be the case when we got near enough a full strength team out.

Am I happy to settle for safety this season? Yes. Do I strive for us to be top four? Yes. Do I think we are going to win Super League every year for the next 20 years? No.

There's nothing wrong with realism. Doesn't mean that it lacks ambition.

Excellent post, How ironic that some of those that had decided after half a dozen games that we weren't good enough, the players brought in weren't good enough, the coaching staff weren't good enough are now calling others 'ambitionless' for suggesting that making the top 8 is not good enough!!!

I'm happy to have avoided relegation, the middle 8's, the million pound game, we were perilously close to not doing those last year, to suggest we go from being bottom and surviving relegation by a couple of coats of paint, looking like doing the same this year, to be expecting us to be challenging for a semi-final place a matter of weeks later is a bit much, the fact we can still make the semi's at all is testament to the fine job the whole club has done in the last 3 months.
